Or at least some higher being. I'd be creeped out if I believed that all I'd do is turn to dust when I die. The thought of God is comforting to me.

Yes, and I'm glad that you think about things like that. Everyone must know on this Earth that God will always be there for us, and will always listen to us, and always be there to take us back- even if we drift from Him. I would get scared if we were all just to die and turn to nothing, go nowhere. I am Roman Catholic, and it is nice to know that when I die, I am going to have the chance to be in a Paradise, so great that nothing on this Earth can top it- even Ugg boots! Just kidding, just kidding.

Which is partially why the idea of god is so illogical. You are operating off of what you hope instead of reality. Yes, when you die that's it. But why is that a bad thing? You weren't alive for billions of years before you were born, it isn't going to be any different. And even still, it couldn't be any worse than going to sleep. How is that a bad thing?
On top of all the I find the idea of eternal life creepy. Think about it, after a thousand years of even the most pleasant afterlife, you'd be so sick and tired of everything that you'd be glad to get a break. Eternity, to state the obvious, is FOREVER. I don't care who you are, no human being could withstand being alive forever. I doubt many would make it past a couple of hundred years without going insane.

And THAT is exactly why the belief in a god is so prevalent across the globe; Because people do not want to think that they'll turn to dust when they die and the idea of a god is comforting to them. In 3 sentences you analyzed and pinpointed the entire reason that religions exist. Impressive work.

Life is the most frightening thing that ever happened to me. I remember, as a little boy in the attic of my house, when I first realized the meaning of death....I was so frightened that I ran downstairs to my mother crying in terror. I was only about ten years old. She held me and told me that God was not mean and would never kill me forever. My mother was loving and wise and to this day I still believe those words, so do a lot of scientists who believe there is a Supreme Infinite Deity responsible for all creation.....and that means us. So, in an infinite universe, all things are possible and so is being born again ......to marvel at life and all creation for all eternity. Be not fearful......peace to all.

I still believe there's nothing when we die, but I do believe in a higher power (though my deity isn't anthropomorphized in any way). It's not scary. I find returning to all that is (in the natural universe) comforting. If being afraid is your only reason for believing in deity, you might want to reconsider your beliefs. You can overcome fear.

I agree completely with you. The thought of dying and turning to dust in the ground is not very comforting. It can be downright scary.

But that is NOT A REASON to believe in god. It is only a reason to engage in wishful thinking.

Yes, it can be at times.
I always think it would be so much easier if I had a god to pray to, blame things on, ask for strength. But if I ever did I know I wouldn't be able to live with myself.
The notion that after death there is nothing left has never creeped me out. I guess it's all I've ever known.

Why do you fear death if you only turn to dust? That thought does not scare me. In the Old Testament, even God says, "Of dust you were born, of dust you shall become."

Thats why religion was formed in the first place! To give comfort when things go bump in the middle of the night! When your closet door swings open in the middle of the night and you pull the blanket up over your eyes it gives you something to pray to!
