First remember someone will get hurt in a fight. Avoid it if you can. If you loose you could be maimed or killed. If you win you may wind up in prison. Walk away if you can.
If you can not make sure it is the other guy who gets hurt.
Hit hard and fast.
Use all your weapons. fists, nails teeth elbows knees.
A throat strike with your fingers will disable most people. Hit them right where the esophagus and the collar bones meet.
If it is life or death take out the eyes.
Do not try to go all kung foo and kick them in the head unless you are a third degree black belt. kick the knees and the shins.
If they get you in a head lock drop to one knee drive your palm up between their legs grab and rip downward.
Hitting with an elbow is a lot like hitting them with a ball peen hammer.
A sharp punch to the nose can take the fight out of a bully as can a stomach punch or kidney punch if you catch them right.
Avoid a wrestling match if you wind up on the ground with them on top that is bad.

Or spend a couple of years learning a system of self defense.
Remember each style has strengths and weaknesses. I have studied Boxing, Judo and Karate.
For those who do not have that much time quick easy and painful works best.
Have a nice day.

It depends on why you ask. If you are in trouble and need immediate advice on self defense, then all I can really say is keep your guard up, your limbs close, and keep moving around.

If that is not the case, then I'd advise taking some type of martial art. Some good ones I've found are shaolin-do, ki-aikido, and capoeira.

Shaolin-do is a successful line of shaolin schools owned by grandmaster Sin Kwang The. They are very affordable (100$ monthly for unlimited access) , have a good curriculum and good teacher. You learn shaolin kung fu and tai chi, includes weapons and sparring. this is more along the traditional form of training. Locations and more info on shaolin-do.com

Ki-aikido is also along a traditional form of training. It is a branch of Aikido and specializes in throws, pins, dodges, and some weapon attacks. However, unlike regular aikido, the Ki-aikido branch focuses more on the internal aspect of the human body. You will learn strange tricks in this martial art. Some of the people I've met can throw me without touching me. Others can throw opponents twice their size and with little effort (or no touch). There are other amazing feats I've seen done and I reccommend it. Good schools of Ki-aikido will be part of the Ki society. I believe they have a list of online locations (Ki society website)

Capoeira is really really fun. It is the Afro Brazilian martial art developed in secrecy by slaves. The movements can seem flashy and acrobatic, but I've personally felt the power behind some of those blows and the hurt they cause. No move is just flashy to a skilled capoeira practitioner. You can watch some videos of capoeira on you tube. Vides that are usually good will have Bahia, Batuque, mester (master), or batizad in the name or description. It is also a great work out and I lost 20 lbs in a month by adding capoeira to my life. It has done other interesting things for me as well, but you will find those out too (if you take it). A good way to tell the legitimacy of a capoeira school is to ask them who the mestre is (if they know what it means) and look up the name they give you. Good schools will also have a batizad (an event) that will attract several other capoeira groups and mestres for the event.

Sorry If this was too long. good luck.

I guess that's why there are styles... The traditional styles (kata) are each proven fighting systems, the problem being so many people don't understand how they work. Some styles grapple, others punch, and still others just avoid.

Well, it mostly depends on what kind of style you are, or what fight you are in. You should find a style you like then stick with it.

Thats mostly all the advice I can give you. If you need more info just ask me...
