Do it. See the doc and try out antidepressants--you have nothing to lose by trying them. Be aware that there are all sorts of medications on the market, and which one works best for you might take a little trial and error. See if the Doc can give you some free samples to try. Most people start with prozac or wellbutrin, which seem to have the least side effects. Don't be afraid to tell your doc if the meds aren't working or if the side effects are unacceptable. The boost from the meds may also help you to do other things to improve your mood like exercise and more participation in social things that are fun to do. Good Luck!

You need to see a psychiatrist. GP's put their patients on antidepressants not realizing that some of these patients are actually bipolar. The danger is that the antidepressants can cause them to become manic complete with hallucinations, delusions and other psychotic behavior. This can happen very quickly, usually after just a couple of pills.

I would definitely say that you do need to do it soon. If you had to drop out of college and are doing nothing, then you have a real problem. Certainly, you don't have to live like this. Good luck to you.

Depression is seriously debilitating and there is usually something that triggers it. And, it is usually not wanting to confront something painful. The solution is to confront that, or those, painful thing(s). Let yourself hurt over it(them) and adjust to it(them) rather than hiding from it(them). Depression-wise, college students drop out for four reasons: homesickness, isolation, bad-grades and heart-break. Which one is it? Is it all four? Healing is tough because pain lingers longer than we'd like.

Stay off the medication. It is becomming more and more clear that anti-depressants make it worse before it gets better and when it's better, it's the same as it was before you were diagnosed.

See a psychiatrist or psychologist. The normal treatment is therapy. If that doesn't help, they give you meds then. Note that a psychiatrist is the only one allowed to prescribe meds.

If you had a sore throat, you go to a throat doctor. Go see a psychiatrist and he/she will evaluate you.

There is good help out there.
