You can let them do it and maybe make it fun to put back and hope they get bored with it, or put the books out of reach. Just don't get mad at him/her.

Oh, I remember this stage! I had to take 2" wide masking tape (the blue kind) and tape the books into the shelf with a strip all the way across their spines to hold them in place.
Childproofing a house is a chore, but sure saves owies!
You can also gently distract the one year old to other, more fascinating toys. Be consistent, though. Only let him play with his own crate of books, kept apart from the shelves. If you let him take one book from the bookshelf, he will think it's ok to get down the rest.

You can't.
I arranged things so that my daughter's books (she has a shelf full of board books) are all on the bottom shelf. she is allowed to pull them all off whenever she wants.....fighting it is a losing battle, so I let her have the freedom to get into HER books whenever she wants. When she goes for the other shelves, I tell her those are mommy's books and ask her where Gigi's books are......she smiles and goes right back to her books. come to think of it, it has been a while since she even went for my books. and the novelty of pulling them ALL off wore off very quickly. Now she just pulls out a few and looks at them, rather than emptying the shelf for fun. she did empty the shelf for fun for a while......but then she got tired of it. probably because she could do it whenever she wanted.
she loves her books and will pull somd of them off and look at them. I just stuff them back druing the day on the shelf so no one trips, then I fix them at the end of the day after she is in bed.

things like that are america's greatest pasttime for a child of that age! i let both my kids do things like that and took advantage of the time to do things like fill the dishwasher, which is also impossible with a one year around. as long as he or she isn't getting hurt i would just let the child have fun while i went and got something done. my little one empties the bottom shelf and sits in it like her own special little cubby. i put all the books up, all but the board books and filled the empty space with some of her favorite toys. every night i go and re-fill the shelves so she can rediscover america's favorite pasttime once again tomorrow morning! good luck!!! oh yeah, i noticed a lot of people are telling you to put the books up higher. when they are in sight i have found my daughter screams and reaches for them....and even climbs to try t get to them. make sure that book shelf can't fall if she climbs up to them if you choose to move them out of reach! and again --- good luck!!!

Put the books higher to where the 1 year old cant reach them. Or cover the bookshelf with something that he/she cant see the books. Like a sheet or a blanket.

You can't. If it bothers you, move the books out of reach for now, or maybe put his own books there (board books) so that he can have fun emptying the shelf, but then you can start to teach him how to put them away, too.

If you made plexiglass doors on the shelf, then your baby cannot get to them. A simple hinge joint and two panels of plexiglass would make great doors. People can still see your books, and you won't have to worry about your little one getting hurt or ruining your books.

Make them put them back, again and again. I got tired of it and put my daughter's books in an armoire for a while, but I've since put them back on open shelving.
If you do put them out of his reach, leave a couple books out so he can read when he gets the urge. 4-5 books on the floor isn't anything to freak over.

I would sugest moving the book shelf! They are to little to understand, even though you can try to tell them no. Move the books or put something up to block access. Be patient!

By watching the baby moving the books you have to raise a child that age not just set it and forget it.Baby proof your home.Guess its full time baby sitter will be a video game when it gets a lil older whats the world comming to?Guess in a few years there will be a new disease called absent parenting for kids that were raised by kids and parents who just were not part of their lives.
