Not to be an A$$ but that is like asking 'what type of automobile takes gasoline' . In the circles I travel in the .308 Winchester round is looked at very highly. It is strictly a rifle round for the most part but I do believe that Thompson does chamber a 'Contender' for the .308, but I wouldn't want to fire it. My .308 is an M1A variant from Springfield known as the Socom II.

Originally designed for the M14 rifle, it has found use in many sporting guns. Heckler and Koch have an excellent assault rifle chambered in that caliber.
