Do you have a court order at all yet? Go to the attorney general's website and they have numbers and you can talk to a lawyer for free for advice. I did that today. I live in texas. I have the number if you are a texas resident. Just email me.

The main steps are get a child support order online at the attorney generals office or by calling the hotline. Then you set an appointment and they specify custody there. If he doesn't want custody there is no cost to you, no fighting, and it get solved then.

so long as he doesn't have a lawyer maybe it'll be o.k. but I couldn't afford a lawyer and my ex-husband could and I lost custody in a quick minute.

there was no abuse on either side we were both good parents although he was gone in the military while they were little and I raised them almost alone he still won.

In court I couldn't hardly get a word out.
If you don't know the legal system it is very overwhelming just filing the right papers at the right time.

I would recommend looking into legal aid in your area some states I now know have free or lost cost help for parents..

Call you local state bar office found in the government pages of your phone book..
good luck.......

If you are in a custody dispute with another party you need representation. They will be coming to court with a lawyer so you better have one too. Also there is no way to back door a custody dispute. What I mean is if it was a casual sex thing and you got pregnant and do not want the father to have any rights he still has to be notified and given the chance to fight or sign away his rights. If he signs them away it will be quicker and cheaper but you still need an attorney to make sure everything is done to the letter of the law.

Ok, i went throughthe same thing about a year ago. All you have to do is go down to child support and get a letter stating you have prime soul custody of your child. Only if the child lives with you. Carry that piece of paper with you everywhere you go incase something comes up. Then all you have to do is sit back and wait for the father to do something. Then you could request him to pay for your lawyer fees if he takes you to court. I have had friends and family go through this so i know what you are going through. It is not fun. Good luck hun!

you need to have a Lawyer, I'm sorry to say. There are a lot of different loop holes in the law, and when you're doing something as important as this, you can't risk not covering all of your bases.

There are Lawyer's that will work with you on their fees... you just have to do the footwork to find one.

In what state? Every state is different.

In CA you go to your local court house and just file. It does not cost anything. Then in about a month or so he gets notified and has a chance to apply against you. If this is the case you then go to court.

Just go down to the Court House and ask them how to become a lawyer. They are nice people down there and they will be happy to help you... just don't go on a busy day.

go to the library and look at the state statutes. then ask if they have any books on custody. we have books that help people with all kinds of legal problems. the ones in your library can help you with your state's laws.
