I herniated a disk in my low back several years ago. It was decided by the docs that I had at that time, that I wouldn't need surgery as there was a 50/50 chance I would be in as much pain or more. For the most part, my back doesn't bother me, but I do have periods of time when I am just about crippled with pain. Any suggestions or tricks that you've found work when your back starts to ache? Any suggestions would be appreciated, though preferably from someone with a back injury.

Have you tried heat patches? They aren't a magical solution but they can soothe pain a little. They provide an alternative to pills and I'm sure you're sick of them!

Depends on the severity of your HNP. I have to stand in the shower in the mornings letting the hot water hit it for about 20 minutes, then I stretch my hamstrings -- takes some of the tension off the pelvis.
Try laying on your back on the floor with your heels pulled up towards your butt. Press the small of your back into the floor and hold it for a count of five and then relax. After you've done a few of those, roll over and get on your hands and knees and arch your back like a cat. Finally, stand, and try and do side bends, touch your toes and lean back as far as you can go. Let your pain be your guide.
You should consider going back and exploring your surgical options. They've developed some new and promising surgical procedures. Always wise to stay informed and keep your options open.

I, too have a herniated disk, so I understand the pain you are experiencing. For what its worth, I have found the combination of Skelaxin, taken once in the morning and once, again, in the evening, along with Advil Liqui-Gels (3), and icing the troublesome area, to be the greatest relief. I'm not too keen on taking pain meds, but my Dr. prescribed Vicodin, and, in times of intense agony, I'll take that too. Hope this helps, and hope your pain subsides.

my friend who has arthritis in his back find relief from lidocaine patches (prescription) and heat on his back. I use the same for my neck, which was injured over 20 years ago. You might also ask about physical therapy to strengthen muscles around the herniated disk, something my doctors tell me is essential. I hope you feel better quickly.

My back pain doesn't equal yours in any way, but I have found that a hot shower localized to the area of pain, then Tiger Balm liniment or patch helps a lot. I also take Ibuprofen and then try to move around a bit, not stay in one position. I hope it helps. Best to you.

My brother has back problems all the time. He stopped stretching it out - I used to have them - but stretch everyday and haven't had a problem in a few years.
