You can get "banana-plantain" from HEB and Fiesta.

It isn't gross but how you prepared it made it gross.
You can just purchase something without knowing how to handle it because you saw people buying them.

Next time if you want to try something new,ask someone with knowledge about it to tell you how to prepare it.

Banana-plantains are very common in Puerto Rico.
You either fry it ,like you will fry fish. or you boil it like you will boil potato.
Eat with any sauce or gravy.

Tho bananas did originate in Africa,India, and Asia,it's very doubtfull u ate one from those places.Almost all bananas imported into U.S. are from South America, and it probably wasn't the banana that made u ill.Bananas won.t contain any harmful germs because of thier high sugar content.(acidic)Even when really over ripe they are srill good for cooking with as in banana pudding or banana cream pies.
