If you feel that the best option for you is going to be some type of medication, see your doctor so he/she can prescribe the one that is best for you. If you don't wish to do all of that, I heard that taking Bendryl before will help calm you, and keep your ears from popping and keep you from feeling uncomfortable. What ever you choose, I wish you the best of luck and hope you have a nice flight.

Why not try talking to a counsellor for one session to talk about why you are afraid to fly. They can give you excellent coping skills.
You can also let the flight attendants know and they will check on you more frequently.
Very lastly, you can try taking Ativan. But I really dont recommend taking any drugs, or for that matter drinking on the plane.

I have flown since childhood and am getting worse. I have started to take a low dose of Valium prescribed by my doctor. It is great no side effects and I am totally calm during the flight.

Without doubt a low dose of vallium e.g. 5mg prescribed by your G.P. taken 20 mins before you take off will do the trick. And always remember, flying is sooo much safer than travelling in a car!

ironically i have just flown from australia to the uk lat week and then to paris a few days ago and returned about 3 hours ago to the uk.
i used to be petrified of flying - i mean at the terror stage and i have reduced this to the uncomfortable stge - i dont think that i will evef feel totally at ease but it is much much better.

firstly i have some medication help - i take 15-30mg oxazepam. this takes the edge of the terror. i also talk myself through the whole flight - i close my eyes - and i dont let my brain go beserk with irrational thoughts. i keep chanting things to myself over and over - eg 'flying is safer than driving', 'the pilot would not fly the plane if he didnt feel safe', 'god is watching over me and has a plan for me- i will leave it up to him'. i also bought a book called conquer your fear of flying and used to read it during the flight. i dont drink alcohol it makes me worse. i ask the flight attendant if i can go talk with the pilot to alleviate my fear - this helps me alot. i try to breathe through the funny noises.

i think desensitisation is great - the more i fly the less it bothers me. i get to learn the diffrence noises. i say to myself; 'turbulence doesnt hurt - it is only bumps'.

at one stage i used to have to take so much sedatives that i would fall asleep on my husbands lap and drool on his jeans.

by changing the way you think and being aware of those thoughts in your head that actually promote mor fear (eg. oh my god the plane is going to crash, fall out of the sky, blah blah blah)

this is called cognitive behaviour therapy. you listen to the thoughts you have and you then look at the facts and evidence to support those facts.

eg. the plane will crash
thoughts and evidence: very safe way to travel, no evidence that anything will happen.

just keep refuting those bad thoughts. eventually you retrain your brain to dismiss those nasty thought before they can bother you and make you scared.

hope this helps.

Take someone who's more scared than you are with you. You'll be so busy reassuring them and taking care of them that you'll forget all about being scared. Obviously, this is not always possible but if it is, then it works better than anything. But Rescue Remedy will help too.

Try taking Rescue Remedy. Its a herbel remedy made by Bachs. You can get it from chemists and some supermarkets. Its good for calming nerves.

Good luck
