My personal fave is Super Dawg. You can't come to Chicago and not visit Super Dawg. It's a part of our history. The link below has a list of Chicago's best hot dog joints, along with the addresses and phone numbers. What do ya know, Super Dawg had the second most votes! Enjoy your stay in The Windy City!!!

That question provokes more votes in a popularity contest than in finding the "best." This is, of course, a question that may result in several choices as the hot dog has been sold on hundreds of blocks throughout the city for more than a century. I don't think I've ever had a "bad" hot dog in Chicago.

The Chicago newspapers regularly have reader polls or reviews of hot dog stands. Below is the most recent one with 21 contenders. Try them all and make up your own mind:

You have to go to Ed Debevic's. It's at 640 N Wells in the River North district. Not only do you get your hot dog, but you also get Chicago attitude from the staff. It's a tradition.

For a "traditional" hot dog go to Wrigley Field - and whatever you do, don't ask for ketchup! The experience of the stadium makes it even better :)

And I will happliy second Portillo's - did you know you can order them online? They'll ship anywhere in the country - if you're a sad and hungry displaced Chicagoan go to: http://www.portillos.com/store/

SuperDawg comes in second for Illinois, but first in Chicago.

If you are coming from O'hare, stop at Gene's and Jude's in River Grove. It is on River Road, one door north of Grand Avenue. About $1.60 for a hotdog WITH fries!!!! NO ketchup. You won't want it, though.

THEY ARE EVEN OPEN ON THANKSGIVING DAY!

They peel their own potatoes, steam buns, and wrap in wax paper since about 1962. Best product at the very best price. they are open at 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 in the morning. They have no chairs, just counters. YOu stand in line and your order is taken by one person who makes it and takes the money....small margin of error.

Gene's and Jude's
2720 River Road, River Grove, (708) 452-7634.
American. Lunch, dinner: seven days.
Open late: Friday & Saturday till 2, Sunday-Thursday till 1.

Depending on where you're staying, many say Portillo's (local chain, but good) especially if you're staying near Michigan Avenue.

The best is Hot Doug's, but it is a haul and you need to drive. The classics are excellent, the chef/owner is a total freak about sausages. It's definitely a hot dog made with love.

Superdog is ok. It is more famous for its gimmicks, such as drive-in with wait staff on roller skates and its cute sign.

The BEST hot dog is Ira's in Northbrook, IL.
