Who said I was afraid of dying? And people don't go around killing themselves because of the same reason you don't, and some people think its a sin.

As an atheist Taoist I don't believe nothing happens in the end, I do believe in something that could be called a 'soul' and an afterlife.

However I do not believe that it's necessary for me to have any purpose beyond my own. Nothing of the sort has been communicated to me, after all, so I take that to mean I can make up my own mind regarding what I'm about.

I keep living because I want to. I do not require any other motivation.

I have way more to live for than a believer in the afterlife who thinks they are just hanging around waiting to die.

I live for my children, for my friends, my career, the fun I have, the good I can do for others, and the hope that in some small way I can make the planet a little better for the next gen.

I do not cling to an ancient belief that this is all just a phase and that my 'real' life begins when I am dead. How depressing is that.

No wonder Theists have such disregard and disrespect for the planet.

Haha that question makes no sense. The point of living is LIVING! Enjoy the here and now! Carpe diem! That is exactly the point! Why not have a great ride and enjoy life? If the afterlife (which doesn't exist) is so great then THAT would mean there's no point living really. It would be easier to just die and then live the afterlife. Whereas if you think (as I do) that there is just this life...that's all the more reason to enjoy it and have loads of fun and be happy!! Yay!

As an atheist, I get a mite tired of cheap shots by the Christians in this country and in my 7th decade should realize that they simply hate anyone with a different opinion, but here goes: Your reason for living is to pass on your genes & knowledge to future humans, in hopes that they can accomplish the goals you have left undone. The accumulation of knowledge & an ability to pass it on so that future generations may build on that is something the arrogant will never understand. No, humans do not have a soul & the invention of such is the height of arrogance. You are not special (Chuckle) regardless of what your parents told you. I would like to suggest you seek knowledge & evidence to support your beliefs in the supernatural, but since too much would contradict your unfounded beliefs, suspect you will refuse to seek the truth.
I suspect our destiny is to get off the Earth & populate the Universe... leaving the Earth to those that deny knowledge & seek to drag human kind down to their level.

Same things that motivate you -love, family, love of life in general, etc. I don't need a purpose here. On Earth, all things have a purpose, but it isn't quite the grand scheme we imagine. No higher power has big plans for me. I don't have that self centered need to feel "special"
It's the life cycle of all things to die, and I'm kind of relieved nothing happens at the end, I can finally sleep!

I don't feel that there is any reason for living, any purpose in it. We're just here, so the only thing to do is live life, and enjoy it to the extent possible, and try to learn something along the way, not for any purpose, but for the enjoyment of learning.
And by the way, it's atheist, not athiest. You make it sound like we're competing to see who can be athi-er.

Being alive is its own reward. You get to be that almost infinitessimal part of the universe that gets to experience it. And the fact that it is extraordinarily brief makes it all the more precious. We, all of us, did not exist for billions of years and soon will cease to exist again but for a short glorious time we do exist.

And no, I do not believe anyone has a soul if that means something that can exist outside of the brain . Our perceptions, thoughts, feelings, sense of existence is only a process inside our brains.

I have a purpose, actually many purposes, but they were not imposed from outside me. They are purposes I chose.

Life is about the journey. Believing that there is no heaven makes life more precious and I have more appreciation for being alive, finding happiness, and creating relationships. Let me turn the question on you. If you believe you are going to heaven and heaven is the best place ever, why be afraid of dying and why aren't more people killing themselves in order to go to heaven.

I am a good person because I want to be, not because of a fear of retribution. Doesn't matter if there is a heaven to me as long as I am the best person I can be while on earth. If there is a God, BONUS... Make a difference while you are here and stop worrying about what is to come after death. You really have no control over that, do you?

What's the point of traveling somewhere when you know you won't be there forever?

The purpose of life is to give it a purpose and the goal is to enjoy it and make the most of it while you are here.
