Okay so my BF and I have lived together for 1 1/2 years. Everything is great. We are very happy and hope to spend the rest of our lives together. However he hasnt proposed yet for financial reasons, and thats fine by me. The problem is that people keep assuming we are engaged. Or they ask when the wedding was...etc.etc. I try not to let it bother me but I do feel the need to correct them. and I say "No we are not engaged, or married." then I get an understanding "Oh." or "I'm sorry"... Is there anything else I can say in reply that doesnt sound so... pathetic? or that would instigate some pitiful reply? Thanks!

aw. i feel ya, sister.

i've been with my boyfriend for as long, and we are currently "cohabitating" as well... i get the whole "when's the wedding?" thing all the time!

don't be ashamed, first of all. just smile and tell people, ah, there is a ring in my future, but we're just trying to get all our financial ducks in a row first. :)

who's going to argue with a responsible statement like that?

and remember... you know that you two will be together for the rest of your lives... that's all that matters. it'll happen in it's own time!

You are probably feeling guilty because you think that deep down inside that it isn't right for you and your boyfriend to live together before the two of you are married. So instead of going against something that is in your eyes morally wrong, you shouldn't have moved in with him. The only reason I say that you think that it is morally wrong because if you didn't then you wouldn't feel guilty when people think that the two of you are already engaged or married. So only you really know what you need to do from this point forward.

You are smart not to get married before your boyfriend has his financial situation cleared up. Just tell people that hopefully one day you will be engaged, but not for now. Any thing else they ask is none of their buisness!!

Just say "what are you sorry about?" and they won't know what to say, or they'll start apologizing for acting like an idiot.
