At almost every other point in history it was necessary to have to fight for our lives, whether it be to protect ourselves from criminals, or to fight others in wars.

I agree that we have unparalleled freedom and am thankful that we don't have to fight for our lives.

Freedom is an overused and often misunderstood term, effectively it has been turned into a 'buzz word'.

Freedom(n): the right or power to do as one pleases.

This is certainly not what anyone in modern society possesses. However, freedom is available within the constraints of society. This differs depending on the local culture. The 'freedom' enjoyed today is not unparalled. periods of conflict have always come and gone throughout history. To cite the twentieth century as an example, Britain's armed forces were probably at their most peaceful during the 1920's.
It is true that modern life entails different threats to the lives led by our forefathers. The threats of being in a road traffic accident, a rail disaster, an aircraft disaster, electrocution and the increased risk of fire. The list goes on. Terrorism, for anybody who cites this as a 'new' threat, is wrong. terrorism has been a threat to the west for many decades. Wars are still happening today. Iraq (not in my view a singular war, but a number of smaller civil wars), Afghanistan, some parts of Africa, Chechnya, etc so yes, people do still have to fight for their way of life.
The truth is, from my perspective anyway, that threats have certainly been reduced, although i would argue not to an unparallled level, but certainly to a level where the majority of the population can sleep safely in their beds at night.

What do you call this war on terrorism if not a fight for our life?

Yet, I agree we don't have to fight for our lives we never have in this country. All the way back to the the first conflicts on this continent we have had an option of rolling over and showing our soft stomachs to the enemy in surrender. I thank God that we have always had people in the country that wouldn't do that we have always had men and woman who saw this country as the worth dieing for.

God Bless them

We have to fight for our lives still, just different enemies...yobs who stalk us for our money cars and mobile phones, thieves who break into our homes and bureaucracy. The battles may not always be life threatening but the war is real.

Sure and it wasn't like that in the six, when, until very recently, we could be pulled out of our beds, beaten to a pulp and detained for no reason at all, except for being Irish republicans.

Sorry, I don't share your optimism.
