Contrary to what one person said, cold sores do not occur inside the mouth. This is HSV-1, herpes simpex virus type 1. Home treatment includes Tylenol, Advil, Excedrin, Motrin or Ibuprin, plenty of fluids, lip balm (NOT to be shared), and suncreen. Prescription treatment includes the use of oral antivirals such as acyclovir, valcyclovir and famciclovir. Oral (systemic) meds are not always recommended for those with a healthy immune system. Topical treatments include viscous lidocaine and penciclovir cream.

Abreva is the best thing over the counter for them. it is expensive, but it's the only FDA approved medication and it works the best if you use it when you first get the tingling sensation.
Other than that, you could ask you doctor for a perscription of Valtrex (either as a tablet or cream) or Zovirax (either as a tablet or cream). Keep in mind that if you don't have insurance, these medications can be a bit expensive...especially the Valtrex. At least the Zovirax tablets come as a generic and you usually only need about 4 tablets to help it clear up.
Most cold sores will clear up on their own in about 7-10 days though.

If it's in the mouth: Warm water and salt mixed together will make it feel better and go away quicker. It normally takes 7 to 10 days to go away but gargling with water and salt makes it go away in 3-5. You could try ambesol which is a mild anesthetic. Unfortunately there is no cure becuase cold sores are virusus. On the skin I don't know, probably a creme of some sort.

I got identified with herpes virus (type 2) about 5 years back, when I was still attending college and had a dumb one-night stand. I understand loads of people say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a mistake that one time and all of a sudden I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for my entire life. The worst part was feeling I could never date men again. In the end, who wants to go out with a girl who has sores around her "you know what" area? But since a friend shared this video https://tr.im/757FV everything improved.
Not only was I able to remove all remnants of the hsv from my system in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the guy of my dreams and I'm so lucky to write that just last week, in front of everybody in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me! This method provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience true love again. Now I want to help others by sharing this story.

you seriously can't do anything. just don't eat salt, or pick at it. it'll eventually go away. maybe use some chapstick, but after you get rid of the coldsore DO NOT use the same chapstick you used when you had it or you'll get it again.

Welcome to the club. Well there is Abriva if you want to pay $15 bucks for a tube that's an inch and a half long, which is good but too much $.I get a cotton ball soaked in alcohol,it helps dry it up,do this for a couple of days.,I use ( and it sounds nutty but)I put neosporin on it and for me it heals it a little quicker .After you eat that's when you should clean it with the cotton ball with alcohol too and then put neosporine on .hope it helps.

there's a bunch of info on valtrex.com and wikipedia about it. It is actually a strain of herpes but it's only treatable not curable. Do not touch it with your hands, if you do wash ur hands immediatly. No kissing! not even pecks on the cheek if you have the sores on your mouth/lips. By the way it's extremely contagious so be careful!
