The fact of the matter remains that gays and lesbians can serve in the military, as long as they don't 'practice' being a gay or a lesbian. One can serve, but one just cannot have sex. It's like being a monk.
To some, that might seem fair...It doesn't really to me, but what do I know...
Oh yea. I spent 4 years Active Army living in the barracks, and have been in the Army Reserve for 13 years. I have no problem with gays serving. I'm married and very comfortable with myself...If I were ever sexually harrassed in performing my military duties, I would report it to my chain of command...

I served 34 years of military, including a purple heart for wounds received as a River Rat in Vietnam. A gay or lesbian who does his or her job, does not push homosexuality on his or her fellows and lives as they do is fine. We had a fellow in Nam who was gay, but he didn't hit on us, force his way on us or even talk much about it. He didn't let his being gay get in the way of the mission. However, I have met gays and lesbians who hit on straights repeatedly whether they want it or not, try to push homosexuality on others that are not gay, and find excuses not to do their job. Do you see the difference? Would you want your husband or wife to serve in a foxhole with a member of the opposite sex? Would you trust him or her? A gay man is basically a woman. A lesbian is basically a man. Can you see the distraction that would be, especially in combat?

clearly you have not served. Understand that in an operational envirnment, people are in situations where if there were sexual attraction, there would be tention.........tetion causes porblems amoung the "team" the team members keep eachother from getting killed! in other words it would be hard to protect the marine to your left if you are busy sucking off the one on your right....GOT IT this in not a republican isue, it is a commander issue, the demacrats just dont care what the commanders think, they just want the gay vote, and by the way, spot waching nbc, cnn and discovery times, you have been infected!

I'm not a Republican, but I did serve a few years in the Infantry, so I can 'splain it to you.
To make ordinary people into soldiers, you have to change their self-image. No amount of training will matter if a person doesn't have the proper mindset, and believe they are a soldier. Training is much more efficiently done if they think they are soldiers than if they think they are something else.
Funny thing about self-image is that people tend to see themselves as they see those around them. If a person hangs around with criminals, they eventually see themselves as one. If one joins an elite unit of soldiers, they eventually will start behaving as one.
The problem comes in when you have a unit with high morale suddenly learn there is a homosexual in their midst. That starts to impact their self-image. It can (not "will", but "can") degrade the morale and hence the combat effectiveness of the unit. I have seen this happen, and the results could be devastating in combat. Unit morale is far more important than the feelings of individuals, because the dead have no feelings at all.
This probably wouldn't be true in a society where everyone was enlightened by having been brought up in San Francisco, but the fact is, most soldiers have never even been to San Francisco, and thats how it is.
Yes, I'm a Libertarian, and fully support excluding known homosexuals from combat arms roles of military service as long as that is true. I'm okay with them driving supply trucks or doing intelligence work, but they should not be where they might adversely affect morale of combat units.

They don't have co-ed showers for a reason...so no "mishaps" occur, and everyone can feel a little more comfortable. If lesbos or gays were in the showers with their same sex, everyone would feel uncomfortable. You have to be with these people a long time and last thing that needs to be on their mind is "is he/she checking my as* out?" Dont ask, don't tell, if you want to go in the military so badly.

They'd much rather them to stay out of the military and run for public office; become governors and representatives.

isn't that why they say "don't ask don't tell" so if they use that then how would they know they are lesbian or gay?

I haven't figured it out yet. I mean, if they don't like gay people so much, why not just let em go over and die? I think for once, the republicans have done a sort of favor for the gay community. Not that they meant to. They just didn't think of it that way.
