Use linen paper or other very professional paper, including a matching envelope. No designs, just high quality paper.
Put your name, address, etc. centered at the top of the page.
Skip a couple of lines, then on the left side of the page write the date in this format: Month 2, 2007.
You'll start with a salutation. If it's an organization write it to the President of that org thusly:
Dear Mr. Salamander,
Skip a line, then write one paragraph that briefly says, "Thanks for the scholarship." The first sentence should basically say who you are thanking and for what:
**** I am writing to thank you and the Organization of Reptile People (ORP) for the generous $1,243 scholarship you granted me toward my education at Tortoise State University.
In the next sentence (same paragraph) write something about yourself and why you appreciate the scholarship. For example,
**** I am a life long reptile supporter and this scholarship is a significant honor because it comes from an organization doing such good work. In addition to my gratitude that you chose me to receive this scholarship, the funds will make it possible for me to pursue my goal to become a Snake Psychologist and to do my part to make the world a better place for snakes. It is my hope that what we learn will ultimately benefit all reptiles and those who love them.
Next in a new paragraph say something that flatters the organization.
*** The ORP has long been recognized as the foremost promoter of factual information about reptilian emotions, and as such the organization deserves recognition. As the recipient of the 2007 Horned Toad Scholarship I promise represent the ORP with pride.
Then you'll wrap up with another new paragraph that consists of a repeat of your thanks,
*** Please accept my deepest thanks. I am proud to be the recipient of the 2007 Horned Toad Scholarship from the Organization of Reptile Promoters.
Use a standard professional closing, such as
***Sincerely,
Then skip 3 lines and type your first and last names, or your first name, middle initial and last name.
After printing it out, sign the letter above your name.

Thank those responsible for choosing you. Do not mention the $ amount. Amounts are never mentioned in a letter. Only the scholarship. They know how much it was. Tell them how grateful you are and for wht it will be used. Tell them that you know this will help you.

...and as well as the obvious... thank you, why not say a little bit about what the scholarship will mean to you in terms of financing your ongoing education or enabling the purchase of materials and resources for study...etc?

It amazes me that someone would have to ask a question like this, possibly because of my age, but here goes. Thank them for selecting you and you will do your best to make them feel they made the right choice. Now go out and prove it to them.

Just be sincere - thank them for the opportunity they have provided you by helping to fund your education. Tell them you will work hard and put the funds to good use. Tell them you were honored to be considered and very appreciative of their decision. Congratulations.

keep it simple, empathize respect and appreciation, but mainly keep it simple...no wants to read a thank you letter within a novel...make sure and let them know you will you are or were committed to the education and intend on using it to your full advantage
