Is it the same as asking someone to date you?

I used to think that I knew what this means, but people use the term so loosely, I cannot tell you anymore.

I used to think that when someone was "hitting on" you, it meant that they were trying to talk you into going to bed with them.

But now a days, girls say that a guy is "hitting on" her if she doesn't like him, irregardless of what he is really doing or saying to her.

to hit on someone is to like make a move, like they wanna hook up or take you on a date not necessarily to begin a relationship

It means to make sexual advances.
