With ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the military is stretched pretty thin. Conflicts could be on the horizon with North Korea and Iran. Cold war talk from Russia and the Middle East is ready to explode, if it hasn't already. Some European countries have a two military service requirement after high school, but because of liberals and the ACLU, that won't happen here. Is a draft the only way to strengthen the miltary?

Because of liberals and ACLU? Who was the last person to speak seriously about a draft in Congress? It certainly wasn't a Republican.

Okay, to preface, I am a liberal and a Soldier currently serving in the Army Reserve

I am not big on the draft idea, just based on the fact that I think that the military is better off with volunteers as compared to conscripts.

That being said, however, the Army is seriously lowering its standards to make its enlistment quotas, which is causing the overall quality to degrade. Too many criminals, too many dropouts, too many old people, too many fat people, and too many "moral waivers" are really screwing things up.

If the draft would allow us to continue to get peak performers (i.e. educated types who are trainable and will respond to discipline), I think it needs to be investigated.

Politically, it would be suicide for either party. I remember the calls a few months ago when the draft was brought up by democrats..."THE DEMOCRATS WANT TO DRAFT YOU, TAX YOU, SHAFT YOU!" That about made me puke.

I don't think it's necessary and quite frankly I hopeit doesn't happen for my sons sake. I was in Vietnam with solders that were drafted and I wouldn't wish that on my son that has served 4 combat tours in Iraq and is heading back for his 5th and 6th. I want someone covering my butt that Wants to be there, not some clown that was drafted to be there. We have troops in Korea and I am not worried about Iran, as Israel will take care of that...they have to, it's a sirect threat to Their Natinal Security! Not to worry, the Marines have landed and things are well in hand!

Why should there be a draft? If all of the Non Liberal George Bush supporting republican warmongers would volunteer there would be more than enough bodies to to support "W's" war.

Support the man and the war that you voted for..Enlist!

No, but Congressman Charles Rangel (Democrat-NY) believes we need a draft and has sponsored a bill in Congress to reinstate the draft. You can read about it on his website (see link below).

No, we need to teach our citizens about civil duty...about doing something for someone other than themselves, that protecting there country in whatever way possible is a great responsibility

Yes.... then maybe the rich & elite corporate war profiteers might be worried about their children or family being drafted.

The poor and lower middle class hold up the larges percentage of enlisted men/women.

It should also include women.
