A lot of dogs do this. It is instinctual. They take food and run to hide and eat it before a predator can take it from them or hurt them. It's mainly a submissive dog's habit not a dominant one. It has to do with pack instinct.

I have 2 small puppies. I've had a massive puppy while I was once more youthful. I might say a massive puppy is extra vicious over a child. If a massive puppy bits you're going to understand it. Most little puppies will bark and nip at persons best seeing that we do not take them critically after they desire to be left by myself. Small puppies do not fairly deal with babies seeing that they pull there tail and mess with them. They suppose seeing that they're small the puppies now not going to do whatever. Just suppose when you wherein a small puppy how will you get your factor throughout?

Some dogs are a little more protective of their food for various reasons. I don't know if it's more common in small dogs or not, though that's possible since they could be more frequent targets of bigger dogs trying to steal their food. I'd just leave her alone when she does this. She may realize that no one is ever going to take the food from her, or she may always have this little quirk. Even if she never grows out of it, it's certainly a pretty harmless behavior.

My 2 dashunds do this too....I think they just want a comfortable spot to eat their food. They like to be elevated so they think they are big dogs so maybe they dont feel threatened that someone/thing will take it away from them if they are higher off the ground..on the couch or bed..preferred spots in my house.

I've owned a lot of Chihuahuas in my lifetime, and they all do this. I think that the smaller dogs are more aggressive, so this actually makes them think that other dogs are going to take their food (OR YOU WILL TAKE THEIR FOOD!!!)
For proof, try getting her to eat with another dog, and see if she still does this.

My dog does this too and she's "an only child". He's a rat terrier. I just think it goes back to being in the pack and if you have food you have to protect it. I find treats everywhere around my house.

My German Shepherds use to do that. Carry a big mouthful into the living room, dump it, then eat it.
