I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee with a type 111 hitch. I plan to add a trailer break system if I use it for the horse but I need to know if this is enough to make it safe. I have a large QH gelding and I am willing to purchase a single horse trailer or a small double. I need to stay in the $1,000 range. I have found one but I need to know if this is even possible for my vehicle to do safely. The single horse trailer I am looking at weighs in at 1600lbs. The two horse model is 1850. The one horse weighs about 1,000lbs. Is there a bigger towing advantage to the single than just those couple hundred lbs? Any suggestions?

I don't have any personal experience, but my sister in law tows her horses with her dodge dakota. I don't know any info about the vehicle other than it is the 4 door, 6 cyl.
She has trailer brakes and also some type of weight distributor thingy she uses. You might want to take it to a trailer shop and find out what they suggest...

you may desire to be waiting to apply a a million/2 ton finished length pickup as long as you're no longer interior the mountains. somebody in yet another trailering question pronounced they examine in a mag (Horse & Rider?) that the minimum wheelbase you need to use is 114 inches, which regulations out maximum SUV's. My final truck became right into a 1985 Ford F-one hundred fifty and it did basically high quality pulling 2 horses, yet could knock going up long hills until I used ninety 3 octane gas for towing. It had 2 gas tanks so I saved one full of 87 and one with ninety 3! Now I also have a 2002 Chevy 2500HD and you could not even tell the trailer is returned there.

as long as it has the towing package( trans cooler etc) if you are still in doubt, call a dealer or reputable hitch installer.
