Great MEN like Martin Luther KIng and jesus and Ghandi all sacriced themselves for what they thought was right and to help the people here in the real world. If there is a heaven that would get them in i'm sure. But if they did it to get to heaven first is that self serving and kind of against the whole selflessness that in reality they surely exibhited?

breathing is selfish. Be totally selfless and take yourself out so someone else can use the air and other resources you are using up

Your right if you are only doing nice things hoping to get a reward (getting in to heaven) then yes it is self serving and defeats the whole purpose of the teaching unfortunately that is about the only way people will be nice. Ever wonder if (god) knew that we'd turn out this way so he made this supposed reward just so people would be good and nice

Well I think God would look at the intentions in the persons heart to know if they were doing it for selfish reasons or not - but we do not get into heaven by works - we get in by faith. If you believe in God and accept Jesus' price he paid - you should be changed person and hopefully those things that we see as works - like what Mother Theresa and Martin Luther King did would come from that change. Of course all that is easier said than done as I believe it is human nature to be selfish.

Jesus claimed to come from heaven for the purpose of creating a way for others... So his act was selfless. A sacrifice for others not himself. The difference as I see it is that Jesus did not do that to get himself into Heaven, he was already in.

If you want Heaven then you obviously want to ignore other people's suffering, and you shouldn't be happy with people suffering anywhere. Heaven by definition is a place of absolute joy where you're completely unaware of suffering even when there's still an abundant amount of suffering going on.

The bible says you can not get into heaven by any acts on earth. Only by accepting Christ as your savior and following his teachings.

I think all deliberate actions are inherently selfish.
Altruistic behavior comes about because it gives the person more pleasure than it costs them.

It all depends on the intent of the action. If its to better mankind, NO! If its to get your name in the news or paper, yeap!
