Funny you ask this, mines had 3 lately.
You need to get as close to the cats skin as you can and pull the little git right out.

One note of caution: don't use petroleum jelly or a hot match to kill and remove a tick.

Here is a great step-by-step guidehttp://www.ehow.com/how_2257_remove-ticks-pets.html

You can get a tick remover tool that looks a bit like a cross between tweezers and a syringe. Easy to use and once you get the tick out use either a flea and tick coller for cats or get spot on or an injection from your vet to prevent any more tick bites.

Don't wait until it's finished feeding ICK it will be huge by then - full of your cat's blood!

Go to a vet. You could remove it yourself with tweezers, or with a fork (put it between the prongs, lift and twist) but it isn't the best idea.

The vet will either remove it or spray it with Frontline, which will cause it to drop off within a few hours. Regular use of Frontline from then on will keep ticks off your cat.

Olive oil? Salt? What wallies gave you this advice?!

You have to be very careful when removing tcks as you have to ensure that none of the mouth parts are left behind.
There are little plastic tick removers that you can get in pet stores, check the instructions as you have to twist them anti-clockwise while gently pulling.
Another option is to put Tea tree essential oil on the tick (recommended by vet) it is an antiseptic and it suffocates the tick and after a couple of days they fall off.
The other option is to take your cat to the vets and get them to do it.

Argghhh ticks!! I hate them but they seem to love my cat! Firstly do not pull, twist or yank at the tick, if you do this you will pull it away but leave its teeth imbedded in your cat. You can buy sprays etc on the market which are very effective but if you are strapped for cash at the mo simply cover the tick in vaseline at regular intervals, after a few applications tug (very gently) and the tick should come away, if not apply more vaseline and try again later. The vaseline suffocates the tick until it hasnt the energy to cling on anymore. It isnt reccomended that you remove a tick yourself as sometimes they leave bits embedded in the cat but if you are desperate than this method works. Good luck xx

The best place to do it is the vet.
They usually don't charge.
But yes, the best way is to pull it out BY THE HEAD. If you don't and it breaks off, the phangs will still be in there and cause an infection.
Vaseline will suffocate them if you want to try that first.
Lastly, don't let your cat outside without a proper flea and tick treatment like program or advantage.

Take it to the vets. If any part of the ticks mouth gets left in the cat, infection can set in. Better safe than sorry. Our vets have a nurses clinic where things like that are done free of charge.

Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20). The tick will come out on it's own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.

This technique has worked every time I've used it (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me. Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say, "It worked!"

My daughter puts vaseline on her cat's ticks. It suffocates them and they come off in about a day.
