Permanant retainers are no big deal. They keep your teeth from shifting after you've finished with your braces. It is very important that your orthodontist show you how to floss underneath the retainer. The lower front teeth are notorious for acquiring tartar build-up and to prevent a gum problem.

HI JAMES,
THE WIRES OF THESE RETAINERS ARE BONDED TO THE UPPER AND/OR LOWER TEETH. THESE KEEP THE TEETH FROM MOVING OR SHIFTING.
THESE RETAINERS ARE PUT ON AFTER THE BRACES ARE REMOVED AND YOUR NEED FOR BRACES IS A DONE AND THEY'RE NOT NEEDED ANYMORE.

A permanent retainer is no big deal at all. No one can see them and they will keep your smile wonderful. And permanent doesn't always mean 'forever' anyways, just means its not removable and glued to the back of your teeth.

Just remember to floss it properly! :P

Yes, it will hold the teeth in whatever position they are in now.
