I just got 5 free computer programming classes last night.
Signed up (and paid for) for one through school as an online summer elective. The classes are held through an unencrypted setup, so I can take the other five as well in my spare time. In theory, I could learn everything from the classes, then do a test-out later on and get a degree for a thousand dollars or so instead of several thousand.
Considering I was planning to take the computer classes as a way to burn credits and maintain full-time student status, this pretty much rules -- I can take other classes instead now and lear all kinds of extra stuff I wouldn't have otherwise.

I just saw something on a website that is the perfect answer to your question. (And I'm assuming since this is in the Religion & Spiritual section you were expecting something more profound than 'yes'.) It said, "Free of charge, but not free of cost."
While something can indeed be free on the receiving end of things, it always has some cost to the giver. And it is good to think about this. But the real questions are, "What is the motivation of the giver?" and "What will eventually be expected of me in return?" In the case of companies giving away free stuff, it is to convince you to take on the sacrifice of the cost yourself & buy more from them. Sometimes, like you're saying, they expect the sacrifice from you before they give you the so-called free stuff.
This, however, is not the case when it comes to God's free salvation. He took the cost (death) fully upon Himself in Jesus Christ & expects nothing in return. The free will He grants us to reject the "free of charge to us, yet very costly gift of salvation that He won" is the ultimate gesture that He expects nothing in return. And lest we think that He expects faith from us as our sacrifice, He even works the faith necessary for salvation in us by the Holy Spirit through His Word (Ephesians 2:8-9).
So, yeah, I've gotten many things free of charge, but not free of cost--both in the physical & spiritual sense. The difference was the purity of motivation of the giver. In the examples you give it's even up for debate as to whether it's the "giver" who takes on the cost or it's really you--more likely they're trying to trick you into thinking it was them who sacrificed when it was really you. Now free of charge samples at Costco--if you can resist the 1000s of other things to buy, you can usually eat them & walk away at little more cost to yourself than a fuller tummy :). Oh yeah, my husaband & I also received a night at a hotel for free lately, because they promised a wake up call & it never came! In this case, it's more of a begging for forgiveness kind of thing, (but still at the cost of the hotel & maybe someone's job--that stinks).
