Crate him when you can't watch him. Its your fault you allow him to get in the trash. Just like a child you are in charge

You have to give the dog something that it likes more than the trash. Like a bone or a chew toy and keep the dog away from the trash!

Booby traps are a great way for the dog to teach itself that it does not belong in the trash. Put some cans with 10 or so pennies in each on top of the garbage lid (if there is one). When the dog tries to get the garbage, the cans fall and scare him.
For more persistent dogs or a trash with out a lid, use said cans, tied together with some string, and then tied to a very appetizing treat (a piece of hot dog works in our house). Put the hot dog in the trash, and if possible the cans on a shelf/countertop above the trash. Dogs steals dog, cans follow, dog gets wrapped with cans making an awful racket, and most dogs don't want ANYTHING to do with the trash ever again!
BTW-that technique works wonders for counter-surfers also!

Put a lid on the trash can.. Crate train him so he can't get to it.. Put up a gate so he can't get into the kitchen, feed him a better quality dogfood so he isn't always looking for nutrition... Take garbage/ food that he is going to be interested in and instead of putting it in the trash, put it in a separate bag and take it out to the garbage daily.. Correct him when he goes for the trash...

you can try spraying bitter apple spray on trash can and inside the trash can. theres also a spray to keep pets away from certain areas. good luck. if all else fails you might want to crate train dog for when you not there. they also have a thing called tattle alarm on internet if dog dont like loud noises that will help.

I had this problem with a cat. Try putting a couple of paper towels with some bleach on them on top of the trash. The smell should be a deterrent. You may have to do this for a while. Eventually your dog will instinctively leave the trash alone.

Get a mouse trap and put it in the garbage can. Put a couple peices of newspaper over this and leave the room. When the dog goes to the can it will "snap" at him and make a lot of noise under the paper without hurting him. He will start associating the garbage can with a BAD thing. You may have to do it a couple of times before it takes.
Good luck!

Dogs tend to do things like this, I have a dog and what I do is everytime she goes in the trash I either don't let her inside for the night or I stick the trashcan on top of her when it's empty. I sometimes spray really strong sprays around it when I'm outside, then she goes away from it cause everytime she smells it, she sneezes like crazy! It defenatly works, it stopped my dog from doing it a lot of times.

put a bone, treat, or toys in front/all around the garbage can so the dog will be more interested in that and then forget about the trash and play/eat what is AROUND the garbage as opposed to what is IN it. If you are home when this happens that will also give you time to tell him/her "NO" and hopefully they will learn what they are doing is wrong.
