I understand you are scared. I was terrified at my first exam. I would call the Dr. the day before your exam and let him/her know you are a little scared. I did this with my doctor and he was nice enough to write me a prescription for some Valium. This will really relax you and make things not as scary. It really helped me...and I am a HUGE chicken! :) They will not hold your legs apart, and if you are too scared to proceed, they will stop. No one will force you to go through this procedure. Hang in there sweetie....sometimes it sucks being a woman, huh?

WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR EXAM YOU WILL BE LYING ON A TABLE WITH A PLACE AT THE END ON EACH SIDE TO PUT YOUR FEET UP IN. THESE ARE CALLED STIRRUPS. WHEN YOU PUT YOUR FEET IN THESE THEY WILL BE UP IN THE AIR AND YOUR LEGS WILL BE SPREAD SOME BUT WHEN THE DR. DOES YOUR EXAM HE WILL TELL YOU TO RELAX AND LET YOUR LEGS OPEN A LITTLE BIT MORE. NO ONE WILL HOLD YOUR LEGS APART. IF IT HURTS ANY AT ALL WHICH IT SHOULD OT JUST LET YOUR DR. KNOW THAT IT IS UNCOMFORTABLE. IT ONLY TAKES A MINUTE OR TWO. NOT VERY LONG AT ALL.

You have to open your legs so that the exam can be done. They won't force them apart, but there is no other way to perform the exam. Relaxing and just letting go will make it faster, easier and probably spare you any discomfort.

They will ask you to put your legs in the stirrups which basically holds your legs apart. The nurse will not hold them. You will be able to close your knees but that's about it. But don't be scared, it's okay.
And no sweetie, it's not going to hurt. It's just a little embarrasing.
