Where are you shopping? Gas is way more expensive here than water.

And yet people are screaming about the price of gas. You can probably double or triple the cost of a bottle of water and the people would probably just keep buying it. Now, who is gouging the customer?

There are no standards for bottled water. You can run it from the tap straight into the plastic bottle without any filtering of any kind and turn around and sell it. A lot of major bottled water companies do just that.

Hi, Water is a precious commodity these days, in the country I live we are in a 12 year drought, and yes water is more expensive than gas, any sort of gas.
The fact that people want the purified water more than the water out of the tap has driven the price of water through the roof.
Oh to hear the sound of rain again, we are down to 12.3% drinking water in the dam, which is the bottom, it is full of clay and dead cows who wants to drink that, no one. So the demand of the water is higher and the cost is higher too. So this is the reason why.
How would you like to be only able to shower once a week, in a western country, and have to count every litre that is used in the house everyday.

There has to be a number of things contributing to this. Packaging, marketing, advertising, shipping, the amount of filtering and purifying water has to go through to be bottled, the labor force it takes to get water from its natural state- to bottled water- to the store shelves. BUT a gallon of water has a price that remains relatively constant, while gas prices constantly fluctuate....and at the rate gas is going water won't out-price it for long (if it even does now).

because people will pay for it plain and simple. studies have found in most places there is no difference between tap and bottled and in fact tap is safer as it has been treated (again most places). Figure even a cheap bottle of water at a gas station is 1.00 for 20 oz...... yeah way more expnesive then gas.

I guess it is because you drink it. If you will notice that everything we drink cost more than an equal volume of gas. Milk, water, coke, etc. Everything!

Bottled water, like gas, will continue to cost as much as it does as long as people are willing to purchase it at that cost...and they will.

Silly, isn't it? It is like why does a certain baseball card or coin or stamp sell for a million dollars when another sells for one dollar. People are silly. I drink tap water myself, but my wife insists on bottled water. Go figure.

Gasoline is more expensive than bottled water.

Gas=$3.00/gallon

Water=$1.29/gallon

I must note that this is for a gallon jug of mountain spring water in a discount store.
