Say you do something majorly wrong towards a person but its over and done with and they dont know about it, do you have to come clean with them to be forgiven by God or can you just ask God directly for forgiveness?

U can ask God directly for forgiveness, and He will grant it if U are sincere. U may find, though, that U want to clear it up with the other person as well. Hope this helps.

Your not supposed to try and decide this based on whether God will forgive you or not. God is not a get out of jail free card. You are supposed to do the right thing. Take a long honest look at what you did to your friend and then do the right thing whatever the consequences are for you personally. Then you can be sure you are right with God.

God will forgive you, but sometimes your prayers will be hindered. You ask God for forgiveness, but you have to make sure you are also forgiving the person that you have wronged or has wronged you. We have to do unto others as we would have them do unto you. Ask yourself, if you were the person that was wronged. How would you feel, and would you feel it was the "right thing to do" to come to you and make reconcilation. Make sure you forgive that person, release them to God. Also, here are some scripture references.
Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions. Mark 11:25
Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.
Matthew 5:23-24

That shouldn't be up to what you think a superstition says. If you only do good things because you think an invisible skydaddy is keeping tabs on you, then you are already an immoral person or at least amoral.
You have a brain. You know yourself and you know the situation. You also know who you value in your life and why. If you value the person and have compassion towards them, then you might consider making amends to that person just out of respect. If you don't care about the other person, not making amends will definitely indicate that, or it could just indicate your own fear of reprisal from that person. On the other hand, perhaps your fear is founded and you don't want to upset something done because it will cause worse effects.
I can't decide that for you. Whether I forgive you or you think some deity forgives you really isn't the point. This is between you and that person.

I have asked myself this a million times. I ended up going to my pastor who actually counseled my to that putting the guilt and shame of my sin on the person may relieve my conscious, but puts the weight of the my on them, not making them a sinner..but giving them all the negative emotions that came with my wrongdoing. I don't know if that's the right answer, but after I prayed and asked God for forgiveness, I felt much better.

Your conscience should direct whether you ask forgiveness from the person you wronged. Asking forgiveness from an imaginary god only make yourself feel better. Your choice.

The thing needs to be settled with them both. Pray that God will forgive you, then ask Him for the right time and place and to prepare both of your hearts to deal with it in the right way.
I have had to do this. Requires humbling ourselves and can be difficult if pride rises up and we don't deal with that too.

No sin is unforgiven by God, except blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. But to cleanse your conscience completely, you should go to the person, confess, and hopefully reconcile. God is pleased when all of our relationships are right.

You can ask God and he will forgive you.
But can you imagine the Freedom you would experience if you could also gain forgiveness from the person?
Sweetness!

God won't forgive you if you haven't forgiven others. But if you go straight to God he will always forgive you but then may instruct you to her.
