You're confusing love with infatuation. It's absolutely impossible to be in love with someone you've never been with in person.

Yes and no. It really depends. Here is something to consider: what is in the inside of a person is what you really fall in love with, not what is on the outside. What is on the outside is mostly lust and hormones. When you meet someone online or some other way that is NOT face to face, you are essentially falling in love with who they are on the inside... BUT... you don't know if it is really them. There are a lot of signals you can get from a person's body and face that cue you in on their real intentions and feelings if you know what you are looking for. Also, there are a lot of things that you cannot express unless you are together physically, and this plays a huge role in deciding whether or not you truly have chemistry between you, which is a necessary component of true love. So, for the most part, until you meet someone face-to-face you don't really know if there is a chemistry between you. You don't know the little annoying things they do, or the way they act in a real-time, real-life situation. You don't really know if it is "love," or only a proto-love or crush. Those are really important things in a real relationship. ESSENTIAL things.
All that said, I met my current wife online. We "fell in love" on the internet without ever meeting face-to-face, and all I had was a single picture of her at the time. She didn't even have a photo of me at all. That said, in retrospect I don't believe what we were experiencing was true love. It was a crush, mixed with a little lust and an idealized vision of what we were each like. This allowed us, however, to take a chance, and true love developed later. We've been married for almost 7 years. But we really got lucky. We did not meet at a dating site or anything like that. We just both ended up in a chat room together and it turned out we had some things in common, so we became pen pals. The secret was this: we had NO desire going in to be a "thing" at all, so we were both completely honest with one another. But one of COULD have lied. It is so easy online. We got lucky.

Its not crazy, although it is not intelligent. You do not know exactly what your getting when you meet someone online/over the phone. Online they could portray themselves as a very beautiful and charismatic individual, whereas in real life they could be on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Be careful when meeting people over the internet.

You are infatuated not in love. Usually when people are lonely or have lower self esteem, they invest their emotion in a person they become attached to and it is possible even more so to do this on telephone or online as we are impressed with a image not real but heard or written. It is partial fantasy as we invision a face and personality with the person not known to us to fill in our void in the heart.

If you think you might have feelings for this person than go and meet him or her and get to know them in the real world before you start claiming you love them.
