I'm a marine so in my line of work, youre either stressed out or bored out of your mind. I've only been smoking a few years now, but i find myself doing it more and more as time goes on. Without patches or gum, what are some other ways to kick the habit while i still can?

The first thing that any stop-smoking plan needs is commitment. If you’re not committed to being smoke free, you will not succeed. Period.

Figure out why you want to quit, and make the decision. Tell all of your friends – that way if you fail you’re also suffering the humiliation of having publicly failed. Give away your cigarettes or throw them in the garbage. Toss your ash trays. For a few weeks steer clear of bars and places where a lot of people are smoking.

The downside to the gum and the patch is that you still have the nicotine. You start to get over the need to have a cigarette in your mouth, but you still have the nicotine, so you’re still addicted to the drug.

There are drugs you can take that will help with the psychological part – Xyban is one of them.

I went with cold turkey. I told everyone that I was going to do it and not fail. I broke all of the glass ashtrays and tossed everything in the garbage. I gave my friend the 3 packs that were still in my purse. I flushed the 7 cigarettes in my open pack. Then I went to a movie, went on a bike ride, took a long bath, went for a nice dinner at a non-smoking restaurant, and suffered for 4 days.

It’s been 9 years and I’m doing great. Best decision of my life.

You're a marine, so you must have a stronger will than I do. Decide to do it, and just do it.

Good luck to you!

I smoked for 12 years, about a pack a day.
I couldn't have been able to quit without the aid of the patch.
More importantly, no matter what method you decide to use or not use to quit, it starts with making a decisive decision to quit for good. I followed the 3 step program with the patches. After the final step, I transitioned to chewing regular gum, especially after I ate. Time heals all. In a matter of a couple of weeks the withdrawls will decrease significantly. It's been 1 year (May 29th, 2007) that I have not had a cigarette. Since a year ago, I've hit the gym and did carido everyday to fight the cravings and restore good health. I feel better than ever. You can do it too, just remember that every minute, every day, every week, and every month that you don't smoke is that much more reason not to light a cigarette up again. Everytime I was tempted, I just reminded myself of how far I've come.
Good Luck to you!

Natural Quit Smoking Magic

I personally was a three pack a day smoker. I asked the people at the restaurant where I worked to help me quit. I told them that if I asked for a cigarette that they wouldn't hurt my feeling if they told me NO!!!!
I also picked a day and in front of my husband counted out all of my cigarettes. I was able to make it for that day. Then it just got a little easier from there.
When I quit smoking cigarettes were .75 cents a pack. Think of what you could do with the money that you save. Perhaps there is something that you have been wanting to buy and with the money you save on not buying cigarettes, you can buy what ever it is that you want.
Also, I always said that I would never date a smoker because kissing them to me is like kissing an ash tray!!!
Think of how much better you will smell, you will be able to actually taste your food again and the best yet - you can breath and not be winded and you can walk a distance with out needing to stop because you are winded!!!!
GOOD LUCK AND HANG IN THERE!!!
I have not smoked in 20 years!!!!
One other thing, I don't have either of my in-laws because they both chose to smoke. My husband doesn't have his parents and I ache for him. He lost his mom at 37 years old and he lost his dad at 43 years old. They were both very painful times for him. He is now 52.

One of the best ways to quit smoking is to decide on a day, time and stick to it. Throw awy any leftover cigarettes, crush them so they are no longer useable, to you or anyone else. When you get the urge to light up, remember that there was a time you didn't smoke and you were just fine. You will be just fine again. Within a week, the cravings get weaker and you feel so much better. Since you are a mrine, you should have ample opprtunity to do a bit of PT. This will help to squelch the urge to smoke.

When you feel like smoking....

Drink water.
Chew gum.
Eat sun flower seeds with shells.
Keep your mind active and OFF smoking.
Don't be around smokers.
Get a new hobby.
Just keep occupied.
Don't drink alcohol.

2 weeks and you'll wonder why it was so easy.

Don't use the patch or any shitty thing like that. All you need is willpower and persistence.

Get into another habit like biting your nails. It is better for you. I am a kid, and my horseback riding trainer smokes, and everybody looks at her when she smokes. Everybody talks about how they never want to smoke. One kid said something to her; said that smoking is bad for you and that she should stop because his mom's dad died from smoking. Please think about that. Thanks for doing what you do.
