A Toyota Prius gets up to 60 mpg IN THE CITY. That is DOUBLE what most cars get, and THREE TIMES OR MORE better than an SUV. Think about how many times you fill up your gas tank in a year. Now cut that in half or MORE. Simple math says it is worth it, and the fact that you are helping preserve the environment makes up for any extra costs. The fact is that if more people started thumbing their noses at the gas companies by buying these hybrids, they'd likely start dropping gas prices to get us back. If not, then you'd still be glad you were driving the hybrid.

As far as dependability is concerned, check out Consumer Reports' Auto issue. Pretty much ALL Toyotas have proven to have great reliability rates, and the Prius is no exception.

Hybrids are not worth the cost quite yet. You will probably never save enough money on gas to offset the increased cost of the car. However if you are simply interested in buying a car that is environmentally friendly, than it might be the car for you.. If you do the math, a hybrid costs about 7-10 k dollars more than a similar car that is not a hybrid. With fuel savings alone you would not break even until you had driven the car more than 300,000 miles.

Hybrid cars tend to have less emissions than a standard automobile with the same miles per gallon, primarily because they burn less gas. With the hybrid, (in general) half of the energy comes from electricity, and the other half comes from gas. While this may vary from the type of car to the type of car, in general the hybrid will have less emissions. When a car burns gasoline, the left-over waste is pollution that comes out of the exhaust pipe. Since the hybrids burn less gas than the average car because they gain some of their energy from electricity, they have lesser emissions.

This is simply a personal opinion, so you are welcome to disagree.

I do not purchase Toyota products, or any other Japanese or far-east name brand. Reasons: American quality (especially GM) is just as good, the profits of a GM or Ford go to mostly American stockholders, I am old enough to recall the post WW2 times, and I know American troops suffered terribly under Japanese subjugation. Further...There are many GM vehicles that deliver about 35 mpg. I paid about $14,500 for my 2007 Saturn Ion, and it delivers 36 mpg on the highway.

In all honesty, I have not heard of anyone who was dissatisfied with their purchase of a Prius. It does do extremely well in the city (like maybe 60 mpg), but they run so quiet that blind pedestrians cannot tell they are present. The Toyota quality is mostly a myth spread by left-wing media. There have been many recalls of Toyota products of late.

Prius can seem under-powered on city hills.

I hope you get lots of input, because I'd like to know what owners of the car have to say after a year of driving it.

Good luck

Even Toyota is questioning the hybrid technology. The future is electric all the way. It's only a matter of time.

DO NOT GET A HYBRID!!! THEY ARE NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!! IT TAKES 7+ YEARS TO EQUAL THE AMOUNT YOU SAVED ON GAS OVER THE PREMIUM YOU PAYED FOR THE HYBRID UPFRONT!!! SO FAR, THEY SEEM RELIABLE, BUT ONLY TIME WILL TELL. I WOULDN'T RECOMNED IT UNLESS IT MAKES YOU "FEEL GOOD"
