What's funny about this is that I was taught, and my cousins are still taught, to stand out as good Christians and be a witness for the sinful hordes around us through our actions. To stand out and be individuals, as it were.

Whenever people get to talking about "too much" individuality, I get all nervous and start seeing scenes from "1984" and "the Handmaid's Tale".

You assume that being a loner is an idea gotten from someone else. No, it is your own idea...is this an indication of how the herd thinks?

Individuality is not a bad thing. Everyone needs to have individual difference and independence but when you are too independent you tend to become isolated and lonely.
