In addition to accessing via a web browser, you can also use the FTP command from a command line (MS DOS) or shell prompt (UNIX/Linux/BSD). Most public sites will let you connect using the following credentials:

User: anonymous
Password:

NOTE: the email address isn't checked so you can put just about anything that looks like an address.

Once connected, you'll be working from a prompt so use commands like:

cd - to change directories (i.e. "cd pub" to get to the pub folder)
ls - to list the contents of the current directory
dir - Similar to "ls" but looks more like the MS DOS command "dir"
bin - to set to transfer binary files
ascii - to set to transfer ascii (text) files
get - to actually get a file from the remote location (no wild card characters for this option though)
mget - to get multiple files or use wild card characters)
put & mput - similar to get & mget but these will put files onto the remote server

Other command options exist and you could easily find using the "?" on the prompt or you could search for FTP command online.

Oh, if you are downloading a lot of files, you might want to look at an application that will simplify the transfer. FTP from a command line doesn't handle directory structures but an FTP program will. Browser based FTP access doesn't handle multiple files but is generally easier than the command line.

what seems to be the problem? just navigate to the folder and right click the file and select save as... if you want an easier method to download multiple files then get a automatic downloader like free download manager or an ftp client app like cuteftp.

and yes those are all linux distros, select one, i suggest mandravia or unbuntu.

If it's for a local business, I suggest you also find a local web host because it's better for search engine optimization, something you'll eventually want to do.

If you're viewing from the explorer you can probably just copy and paste (which will the equivalent of Save Target As...)
