In Biblical times polygamy was practiced widely. Yet each polygamous family portrayed in the Bible is unhappy. Whether the problem is the rivalry between Rachel and Leah, the tow sisters married to Jacob, or between Hannah and Peninnah, both married to Elkanah, or the conflicting demands by David’s many wives and thie feuding children, the biblical authors subtly point out the disadvantages of a polygamous marriage.
In contract, Sarah and Abraham form a distinctly monogamous marriage within a polygamous culture, as do Rebecca and Isaac. In the Garden of Eden, too, we have one woman and one man. The narrative makes clear that an intense relationship between husband and wife in a polygamous marriage is nearly impossible. The presence of multiple, contending wives dilutes all the relation-ships within the family unit. The Bible strongly implies that polygamy does not work, that monogamy is a preferable structure. Th intensely committed personal and loving relationship between one male and one female parallels the intensely committed relationship between one human and God.
-------
Modern Day:
The USA is having difficult times with polygamy and the Morman community. A few Mormon leaders have polygamous lives which produce many childreen. Societies are getting a surplus of "Lost Boys" abandoned by the community because of their age (14-18 year olds). It seems that the older men want to be the roosters in the community, and feel challenged by the young men as they mature.
So, the laws need to protect the "Lost Boys" and protect the young women (14-18 years old) from pedofila & incest.
It must be noted, that these cases exist, but are rare and not the majority of Mormon life styles.

As a system, it doesn't function particularly well. It leads to unhealthy relationships, jealousy, and paternalism. Children raised in polygamy tend to have developmental issues, and ideological deficiencies. Often social boundries become skewed, and women are treated as chattle other than people. Polygamy only functions on the level when there are multiple husbands and multiple wives, or so-called "Clan Marriages."

These days with dwindling resources and overpopulation there is no good reason for it in my opinion.
In the past Women did not have opportunities or the education to earn their own money as they do presently and required men to support them and their children.
I think some men just want to legitimize having sexual access to more than one woman.

I don't mind it... though I've heard it can get sticky, emotionally and legally.
I mean, who divorces who? Are the wives still married if the husband leaves? If a wife wants to divorce the other wives but remain married to the husband, is that ok? What happens when there's no living will?

having more then one wife was only revealed back then
because at the time 100s of men were going out to war and died. they left their wives(one wife each) behind with families.
so to make it fair to the women they needed financial and emotional support so that is why it was revealed.
plus if you do you MUST treat all of them the same, if you buy a ring for one then you buy a ring for the others.
and although you can have more then one wife (in extreme situations) it is not recommended because God says that human nature will not allow for man to treat for women equally. So God says only do it in extreme situations (like the one above)

Well, in the case of the mormon fundamentalists in Colorado City, Az who practice it, it has become, essentially, socially accepted rape of young girls by powerful (often OLD) men in the community. Then, the young women go on welfare and you and I pay.
Warren Jeffs is currently being tried.
