It's that whole nature vs. nurture theory. Are we hardwired to laugh at farts from birth or is it something we find funny once we reach a certain age (socially conditioned to laugh at them)?

Take a look at the link above (when no one is around). Now, is that funny or disturbing?

laughing from fart suppose to embarrass the one who did it or people laugh because they find it uncomfortable for themselves being around. I think people suppose to 'keep farts for themselves'. of course u could contradict that by saying 'but it's natural!'. Yes it is. But in social conditions there's a word politeness. nobody would laugh if u would do that alone, in front of yourselfs. i think it's rude to laugh if some old people farts 'because we all know they cannot hold it.

I don't know if it's social conditioning or that we understand the unappropiatness and just enjoy it because it's breaks the tension.

However, I think it might have something to do with the way the simian mind works.

Koko, a great ape that was taught sign language was taught the sign for Feces. It was supposed to indicate she needed to relieve herself and she was never taught any other connotations of the word. However, later in a conversation, she was angry at someone and signed "He is Feces". Or something to that effect. So maybe it is funny because of the way our brains are wired.

Farts and burps are considered perfectly natural in Indian villages.

In some communities, NOT burping is considered an insult to the host. The food wasn't tasty enough to prompt the guest to swallow air in his hurry to eat.

I say it's social conditioning.

A "BIG STINKER" is nothing to laugh at. That's some serious sh*t and not to be taken lightly. They can be olfactorily injurious to humans and animals. Plus you stand the chance during the "biggies" of losing sphincter control and the horrible sight of the "Hershey Squirts".

I think usually people laugh due to embarrassment for themselves or others. Not polite to fart in front of others. I think it is a social thing definitely.

That would be nurture. People are conditioned to laugh because other people do.
