I just take my foot off the gas. If they want to pass, I let them. Hitting your brakes can be very dangerous. Either the car behind can lose control, or you will be hit and thrown into a spin.

I know it's frustrating to have someone driving so closely behind....and I ticket violators all the time. Had one yesterday tell me they thought they only had to be one vehicle length behind the driver in front. They didn't realize it was one vehicle length for every 10mph.

Sad thing is that some of the responses here are discouraging in the fact that braking hard on a tailgator is just as much of an indication of aggressive driving as tailgating. Two wrongs don't make a right. Why not just let them pass and be done with it?! Blocking traffic in the "passing lane" is a violation also! It doesn't matter if you're doing the speed limit...you are not passing therefore should not be in the left lane.

The one blogger who states after braking they prevent the driver from passing....another violation!

What happened to driver courtesy on our roadways? If a moron is speeding or breaking some other law...let the cops catch him down the road...don't play police on the highway yourselves...you're asking for trouble from someone who may decide to do something extremely dangerous with the potential of causing a serious accident or death!

In my own jurisdiction, road rage is a top issue addressed by the policy makers and a guaranteed trip to traffic court!

Just my humble opinion!

Everybody does it in some form. Sometimes just applying the brakes just a bit from a safe distance makes them aware of their surroundings. The soccer momma in a huge SUV and on the cell phone may start paying attention.

Yes slamming on your brakes is bad. It could be argued that just tapping your brakes could be as well. But you know someone on your end is endangering you and them. A car is not a place to bully people and as I said awareness and realizing this is key. It amazes me that people are so clueless as they are the first to complain that they are late or why they got into an accident.

The horn and a slight brake work wonders. Its kind of like you braked and hit the horn by accident. But you best be a good driver to do it.

NEVER do that..if an officer sees that...he may actually pull YOU over for wreckless driving. AND, in an accident report, insurance will not touch helping you out if they found that you slammed on your brakes on purpose. Not smart.

I find that passive aggression like that can just lead to trouble that I don't need. I don't want to spend time walking because my car is getting the #$# end repaired. I usually look for a break in the traffic and move out of their way.

I consider that they will get theirs for speeding at some point. I just don't concern myself with people like that.

Slamming on the brakes is just stupid and dangerous.

I drive right AT the limit and make sure I am next to somebody doing the same.

Then the guy is stuck back there!

I usually give them a slight brake check first, then I give the full onbrakes if they dont get the message the first time

Yeah. I know you're not supposed to do that, but if the person is being a real ***, I will. Then I'll let them pass me, and then cut them off. I kind of get road ragey though.

Yeah, but I don't break check. All slowing down is going to do is irritate them. Doing a break check could get someone hurt, and it's not worth that.

Ahh, it's called giving someone a "brake check."
