Modern marriage is now about equality. Two people.
Three or more people creates an imbalence of power and a structured higherarchy. Plural marriage is untennable in a modern, progressive society. If multiple people want to live together as a polygamous family - fine. But marriage can only be between two people given the power implication. Women would be subsurviant to the man. Anything that removes the inequality of women is bad for society.
Gay marriage/unions do not effect anyone else and is not a slippery slope. Men will not be marrying dogs as some zealots proclaim. People said the same thing about interracial marriages.
Gay marriage OK. Polygamy bad.

Muslims have allowed a man to marry more than one wife with certain limitations and conditions. But polygamy is not advocated or a compulsory thing. An example of this is if the wife is chronically ill, or is barren, or for some other reasons it is not desirable for the couple to live as husband and wife.
The remedy offered by certain societies (like Americans) is to divorce the wife and remarry. Is it the best idea to turn out a woman in the middle of her life from her home, just because she remains sick or she happens to be barren? Islam discourages such cruelty by permitting polygamy.
Unfortunately, the West, have used this permission of polygamy for criticizing Islam. Their motive seems just to oppose Islam and by degrading it in the eyes of the world.
I hope that helps you understand why polygamy is occasionally allowed in Islam.

"Pandora's Box" is an extreme over-generalization for a situation that is only a problem for people who cannot accept any beliefs other than there own.
Like it or not, marriage is a contract. It's even a financial agreement for many. An American wedding is a contract, and therefore, bound legally by the Christian mindset which founded this country. You seem to feel so set and comfortable in your ways, that any other type of marriage seems wrong.
In many countries, women are property and traded by families in exchange for services or goods. I'm not saying this is right, but it's just how it is.
So two guys or girls wanna get married? So some guy wants to have a marriage with two women? What about two guys and one woman?--Oh no.
Maybe you should rephrase your question, "What is your opinion on freedom of marriage?" instead of asking and then implying the answer you want. Stop begging for your ideal answer and stop thinking that your ideal answer might actually be the right one.
Keep in mind that we are in the category of "religion and spirituality".

I've never cared for polygamy laws. They were introduced as a direct attack on a new and unpopular religion (LDS / Mormons), and are an intrusion of law into a matter in which the government has no business.
At the same time, I've never much cared for the idea of polygamy, but that is my personal tastes. If three or more consenting adults want to get married, that's their business.
I also think it is silly and redundant to arrest and jail someone for having more than one wife. Having multiple wives is its own punishment.

I don't think that polygomy should be outlawed as long as all of the wives are legal and willing adults before any romantic relationship is initiated. Mormons marrying 12 and 13 y/o girls make me sick, but if they're all consenting ADULTS I don't see a problem. The Xians that are so perfect that they insist on telling everyone else how wrong they are are the only ones that seem to have a problem with everything everywhere.
Taking a child's innocence in the name of polygomy is digusting, but consenting adults should be able to marry whomever they want. Arab and Asian cultures have been doing it for centuries. What is the problem? It's not your man.

I suspect they are either independently wealthy or they have not been fully introduced to the state of the American economy. Most religions that allow polygamy also require the polygamist to adequately support his wives. What is allowed is not always commonly practiced, especially among the poor.

As Muslims we are ordered to follow the law of the land we live in.
having more then one wife was only revealed back then
because at the time 100s of men were going out to war and died. they left their wives(one wife each) behind with families.
so to make it fair to the women they needed financial and emotional support so that is why it was revealed.
plus if you do you MUST treat all of them the same, if you buy a ring for one then you buy a ring for the others.
and although you can have more then one wife (in extreme situations) it is not recommended because God says that human nature will not allow for man to treat for women equally. So God says only do it in extreme situations (like the one above)

Let them.
As long as they are all willing participants of the age of consent, it really doesn't matter what combinations they wish to cohabitate in. The government really shouldn't be involved in issues of whether a particular union is Biblically correct or not. From their point of view, it is just a contract between people that carries some responsibility as to children and property distribution. The term "marriage" should be taken out of the laws and replace wholly with "civil union". That way, the religious fanatics won't have to worry about the government "redefining" marriage.

If a person wants to have two wives (or two husbands) let them.
The thought of two mother-in-laws is enough of a deterrent for me.
But in all practicality this issue was settled with the Mormons a long time ago.

I say go for it. I'm an atheist, and I would love to have like, I don't know, 30 love slaves. 1 per day of the month. All washing my feet and feeding me grapes and steak. That would be sweet, just me and my ladies wearing loin cloths living in the Amazon jungle, create our own village. I can't wait for retirement.
