They call it Welfare over there but I'd suspect you would only get it if a) you're American and b) if you paid into a fund like our National Insurance but I'm not sure?

The USA has a Social Security Program into which a person pays while earning an income. The amount paid in by the employee is matched by an amount paid in by the employer (except for self-employed people, who must pay the whole thing themselves). Our system is at risk as non-sustainable, as the largest-ever generation is hitting retirement age, and fewer people will be paying into the system as that generation begins to withdraw from it, so what to do about this problem is one of those BIG legislative issues.

That said, our benefits are not like benefits in the UK -- in great measure because the UK has socialized medicine, and the USA does not.

US has social security - you pay into it while you're working, and if you pay in for a certain length of time, receive a monthly benefit check when you retire. It also provides disability benefits, and survivor's benefits, to those eligible.
