Well, basically you have to understand when this was all written. At that time, women were subservient to men, and men wrote these books. Now, they had guidance from God... This is God's word, but that depends what you believe. I myself am a christian, and I believe the bible. The old testament, though, is God as he was to the Jews. He was shaping the world still, and he had a lot to deal with. Remember, everyone wanted to kill the Jews, so, the Jews had to be strong. He was basically being firm with his children, the jews. Just like a parent is firm with their kids when they do something wrong. In the new testament, the Christian part, God seems different. He's gentler. Women are less subserviant than in previous parts of the bible, and even get leadership positions in some rare cases.

Basically, the word had to be appealing for people to join, and this is what was appealing at the time. That's why Christianity spread so quickly. Anyway, hope that helped...

You must know that women have much more freedom in culturally christian/pluralist countries than mohammeddan ones. There were traditional sex roles here; but rules about women and men in the christian faith are not the strict diktat rules you are stuck with in the Koran. Faith in God is about coming into relationship with Him, not rules.

The killing of non-believers presumably refers to Joshua's conquest of Canaan. Certainly it looks hard, although bear in mind that God said that Abraham's descendants would go to Egypt for many years until the wickedness of Amorites had reached its height - so at least they were exceptionally perverted when they were removed from Jericho etc.

In the Old Testament you will find God punished the Israelites as much as those who attacked them.

The New Testament enjoins love for neighbour; we are told to pray for our enemies. The old Covenant was based on tough rules with heavy punishment; we can now be born again so a better Covenant is available.

It only seems like that in relation to our society now, at the time the ideas that are presented in the old testiment were very radical and open-minded. (altho the opposite to how their shown now). And the ideas in the new testiment so much more again. Nothing means the same out of context. They wouldn't have listened if the ideas were too different, it had to be done gradually. People can't have big changes thrust upon them.

sorry this was so long and rambly.

1) God wanted His people to be kept pure, so He kept them away from other temptations. he doen't say that believers should kill - in fact the 10 commandments say "Thou shalt not kill".
Women are not subservient to men. Man and Woman are an equal partnership, but that in a marriage it is the man who takes the responsibility. the woman is answerable to the man; the man is answerable to God. Marriage is a symbol of Christ and His Church - the Bride of Christ. Hope this helps.

If you look at the old testament history, you realize that people couldn't do that law..That's why He stepped out of the light, and into this world in the flesh as Jesus Christ! To die once for the sins of the world, so we might believe, be saved, and not die in our own sins.

Common misinterpretations. However, God IS strict.

Because they were a stiff-necked people, I gave them a schoolmasters law, which was not good.

It was not good that the people were stiff-necked. that means they refused to do right unless it was made law. IOW, the reason God is strict is because people are evil. Stop doing evil, and strictness will not be needed.

The law is for lawbreakers. Those who do right without a law do not need a law. If you don't kill, e.g., then you don't need a law not to kill.

Both the OT and the NT condone slavery and the subservience of women, and killing various kinds of people. Hardly "all-loving"

Subservient.

And they were something different prior to that?

The OT law applies to those who are wrapped up in the first covenant, (see Judaism) whereas I (and other Christians) are in the second.
