I want to make a backup install DVD of my operating system ONLY, in case my hard drive decides to spin into oblivion. What program would I use to go about doing this?

The OS is much more important to me than all of my programs, it's all I want to backup.

and it has to be on a DVD. I'm looking for an answer to my question, not alternatives.

There are several programs for "cloning" hard drives. Norton Ghost and Drive Image are two of the best. When backing up an OS, you have to do a "clone" because the OS requires certain files in certain places, which a "backup" will not do.

Unfortunately, a clone will "backup" everything, not just the OS. But that is really what you want it to do. If your hard drive creashed, why you only want to put back Windows and then still have to reinstall 25 other programs and all your data by hand?

just the OS? You need the disk used to install it. If you want the OS and everything you have installed an option not yet mentioned would be to create a virtual machine that could be stored on an external hard drive and later restored to its original state. Check out vmware p2v (physical to virtual) converter. google for it.

If what you're looking to do is pirate your copy of windows unfortunately it can't be done microsoft goes to decent lengths to prevent you from making a copy of their operating system not saying it's impossible but not worth your time and effort... And unfortunately the disk that should come with your computer or that you bought from the store is the only copy that's your backup don't lose it.
