I have a 1986 5-spd 300zx turbo that was sitting for about 4 months but was indoors and didn't feel any whether what so ever, just got it back yesterday , and it runs pretty well , still has that kick Z's tend to have. However it is an 86 and times have changed, how much speed/horsepower can I realistically gain with medium difficulty work and for around 2000 dollars?

Up boosting an old engine will only result in KA-BOOM it not realistic to think 21 year old valves pistons can take the extra power. Yes modern engines have better engine management and Fuel pumps and injectors. If you turn up the boost with weak injectors and lean out that will burn pistons. Worn pistons will do the same thing. So start out right with a fresh engine then add power bigger turbo and the like. Spend the money on nice seats and wheels.
