I personally would put the baby in my room. This way you could use maybe a corner of the room for the crib and a few decorations (same color scheme as your room) and put a small dresser of totes of the babies clothes in your closet. It is also better for the baby to sleep in a room where the tv or other distractions won't interupt quiet time for naps and such. :)

I personally had a baby last January, and we are living in a 1 bedroom apartment. We simply set up the crib and change table in our bedroom (it was cramped, but worked out best). I would NOT suggest setting up the crib in the living room, especially during the first few months. Mom will need to rest as much as possible, and since babies wake up every hour or 2, its MUCH easier to just roll out of bed and tend to baby, or even lay baby beside you on the bed.
Once the baby gets a bit older, if you are still in the 1 bedroom, then you can move the crib to the living room and set it up like a babyroom (using a room divider, or curtain hung from the ceiling.

I wouldn't put baby in the living room until later.

Just set up a corner in the bedroom for baby's crib/rocker and go from there. We used a pack and play for our 4th until he was two as it was smaller and easier to move around - fit nicely beside the bed and he slept with us most of the time anyhow. ( no high chair either but one of those boosters with a tray -- less room and easier to clean/move. just thought I'd throw that in). So that can work until they are toddlers if necessary.

Just get a pretty wicker basket or two or a neat tin for the living room for diapers, wipes, board books, lotions, toys and such. Easy to clean up and still can look neat and pretty. You can also tuck a couple under the crib if you choose a traditional model. Hang a shelf above the crib for other items until baby is old enough to pull up then move it. or handled baskets to hold things.

Pretty bumbers and a dust ruffle are all you need for the crib and if you pick something coordinating to your bedding it will fit right in with your room decor.

If you choose you can use a folding screen (also check antique/thrift stores) or a curtain/pretty blanket/quilt to define or close of the area.

I also suggest the baby goes in your room. With a corner in the living room you will have difficulty with company, viewing tv, living noises, toys scattered around, everything extra will wake up baby at times that are not good for you. Keep looking for that 2 bedroom.

Meanwhile set up your living room like a studio apartment. Perhaps a daybed/sofa for yourself or for company.

You could buy or make a folding screen to set off the baby section. It could have baby designs on one side and adult designs on the other,
You could use furniture to define one area , and use furniture that is easily moved.
Think dual purpose for everything, use a large storage chest as a coffee table, or end tables with storage underneath.
Buy only stuff that can be folded or made smaller. a folding crib, a folding playpen etc.

You could install curtains on a long tension rod across the width of the baby's section of the room or you could use folding room divider screens to block light and separate the room.

For example see this Decorative Room Divider:

Go to a home decorating store and look for a free standing blind (folding blind) that way you can move it if you need the room.
