The creative days of Genesis had nothing to do with the creation of the planet. Instead, they were stages of time in which God used to prepare the already-existing earth for animal and human habitation. If you will look at Gen. 1:2, you will see that the earth was already in existence BEFORE the first "day" even started. The earth and the rest of the universe could be millions or billions of years old.

Excellent answer Line Dancer.
It is not an allegory. It is a truth.
The creative days have nothing to do with the verse in the New Testament which says:
2Peter 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
What these knuckleheads have done is take a verse out of the NT at the end of the bible and applied it to the creative periods of time at the very beginning of the bible in the OT.
Now because of "overwhelming" evidence that the earth is much older than 6,000 years, the lukewarm say this is an allegory.
What these jello minds need to do is remove their doctorates and reverend signs and relearn the bible.

I saw a scientist last night on the news showing this new museum in Alberta where they had all sorts of evidence of the truth about "creation" putting to rest once and for all Darwin's theory or so he said! It was on the National News just last night so it wouldn't be difficult to verify!
I must say one thing though that he seemed to ignore. The creative days were far longer than a 24 hour period... You know when you say in my grand-father's day, it was like this or that... you don't mean just one day! Right? Even more so in the days of the time the true God and his son or sons helped in creating the universe or the earth, where we're concerned! It could have been hundreds of thousands of years or more! for all we know...
What that scientist was saying was that the bones that other scientists said were millions of years old was false!
All that I know is that men, not one, has been found to be telling the truth always but God knows everything plus the only thing He can't do is lie! So I put my vote and trust in Him. Hebrews 6: 18; Titus 1:2; 2 Timothy 3: 16 and check 1-5 while you're there! Thank you!

Oh Sara.
This is a misconception.
Christians believe the bible says mankind is 6000 years old and not the heavens or the earth.
its a matter of interpretation.
to be honest though, I just think all these theories whether its the earth being 6000 years old or 4.6 billion years old is just baloney.
There are some things we just don't know.
Just so you know, back then the words millions and billions were not invented.
Just let God speak to your heart.
Whatever you accept will be okay.
Our time on this earth is to precious to be concerned about theories.
God Bless

Actually, it was created in 6 days, God rested on the 7th.
A simple, straightforward reading of the biblical record indicates that the Cosmos was created in six days only a few thousand years ago. Opposed to that view, of course, is the idea of evolutionary theorists that the Universe is 8-20 billion years old, and that the Earth is almost 5 billion years old. Further complicating matters is the fact that the biblical record indicates living things were placed on the newly created Earth even before the end of the six-day creative process (e.g., plant life came on day three). According to evolutionary theory, however, primitive life forms evolved from nonliving chemicals roughly 3.5-4.0 billion years ago, with all other life forms developing gradually during the so-called geologic ages. Man, in one form or another, then arrived on the scene approximately 2-3 million years ago.

Fact.
I take exception to Line Dancer in the fact that Genesis 1:2 says:
2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep.
The word used for form was [tohuw] and it means nothing or empty space.
The word used for void was [bohuw] and it means emptiness.
The earth was non-existant in Genesis 1:2. The creation was ex-nihlio, out of nothing.
There are no passages in the Bible that would indicate the creation is allegory.

I don't know about that "most churches" statement, but the story itself is not written as allegory. In fact, the New Testament writers refer to the Genesis account as a literal event, or series of events. See 2Pet 3 for more details.

In Genesis, the bible states that the earth was created in 6 days, the 7th day God rested. There is no "time" shown as to how long those days really were. Only God knows how long that really was.
