It's lazy writing; seldom spoken at all. Shorthand is capable of writing any word or phrase, while this IM language is simply because many people do IM on their cell phone, which does not have a complete keyboard. It's tiresome to pick out the letters, so a system of abbreviations were developed. Sort of like IBM instead of International Business Machines.

Also, it gets around certain censorship issues, like RTFM did in the early days of computer program. It means "read the . . . manual."
