I certainly would agree to that. I have talked to Canadians about their health system before - it may be flawed in some ways, but at least everyone has access to it.
No one should have to make a choice between keeping the lights and heat on, or to buy their medication. And at the rate we're going, the number of people having to make that decision will only get higher.

We are not a wealthy Nation. 5% of the people control 95% of the wealth!!!!! Socialized medicine will only increase the cost of medical care either directly or through taxes. What we truly need is affordable medical insurance and laws that will reduce malpractice insurance for doctors and cut profiteering by pharmaceutical companies. Far too many people don't prepare for old age, retirement or simply hard times. Mental illness strikes some, many dropped out of society and life on the streets has become their lifestyle. I have worked in low income housing and was totally amazed to see when some (not all) people were given help, food, financial assistance and a place to live they'd screw it up and be back on the streets in a relatively short period of time! You must realize that someone living on the streets has more than likely alienated family, the last source of personal assistance. I don't know the answer but Government intervention is not even close to it. Charitable organizations like the Salvation Army and some of the church efforts seem to get the closest to ground level assistance to these folks. Donate money or time to them, they are more experienced at filtering through the sob stories and getting to the truth of what a "needy" person really needs. All street people have a story they use to gain from, but sadly most are fabricated and they just want your money so they can get on to what they truly want (booze or drugs). It's best to support the "experts" that I mentioned previously.

I will say I am very hesitant about socialized medicine because from everything I have seen when ever the government starts running things the quality goes down and the costs go up.
But I will agree that the situation that medical care is in now is not acceptable.
If we could formulate an affordable and comprehensive way for everyone in need of medical care to receive it with as limited government involvement as possible I think that would be the best alternative.

Ideally, of course, seniors would not have to root through dumpsters for food. However, socialized healthcare is for EVERYONE by its very nature. Do you really feel comfortable with the Federal government knowing your intimate health details? I don't.
As for the seniors, I'm sure there is a way to help them pay for their medications without falling back on the government. Start a charity. Run a fundraiser.
Personally, I feel that the government has too much power already, and to put our health care system in their hands seems foolhardy. There are just too many opportunities for the money or the personal information to be misused.
Look at the othe countries with socialized healthcare: Canadians who can afford it come to the U.S. for medical treatment. In Cuba, Fidel Castro went to a hospital in Spain when he was ill, instead of relying on his own healthcare system. This is the RULER OF THE COUNTRY, people, and he doesn't even trust his own system? Reeks of corruption to me...

The only reason the elderly and less fortunate are not taken care of in this country is greed. Many people want to clutch their money and not give up a dime to help someone else.
I agree wholeheartedly with socialized medicine. No one in a country as prosperous as ours should go without health care, or for that matter food, or shelter. No one deserves that, and it speaks volumes for our country that personal wealth is more important to most people than the good of the community as a whole.

I would love to see socialized medical care here. Unfortunately, the medical profession doesn't care for the idea. They comprise some of the wealthiest people in this country, not to mention the large drug companies. Life is not as important to the wealthy as the almighty dollar, especially since they have no problems with medical care.

How sad. No one especially seniors should have to salvage food from the garbage. It should be a unspoken rule that seniors and kids be taken care of. They are our most vulnerable. There are prescription plans out there in place to help seniors take care of the cost of meds. Granted no everyone qualifies because of income limits(stupid limits). Medicaid in most states have come up with a type of chip programs so parents can afford health care for their children. The ones that cant afford it are on medicaid.

Not just for the elderly - I feel that the U.S. has a responsibility to create a health care system. We rank below all of Western Europe and lots of other countries (some that most Americans would probably be ashamed of not ranking above) when it comes to health care for all citizens.

Debra you have been in this world long enough to know that people don't really care anymore so the answer to your question, is no the churches hardly do anything anymore to help the poor and needy so what do you think, alot of the churches don't even encourage the people to seek God let alone into the ministries, this has been a concern of my for along time, because God dealt with me and my wife along time ago and we stepped out and do this for a season until he told us to stop, the churches are supposed to be set up for this but they alot of them don't even take care of their own congregation let alone outsiders.

The whole healthcare system is a wreck. It would take huge changes, but I'm with you on that one. I'm also concerned about the standard of care that most people get, period, in today's hospitals, LTCF's (long term care facilities), etc. with the nursing shortage, and shortage of good nurses who actually want to do the job.
Nobody deserves pain and suffering.
