The Bible teaches that children are a blessing from the Lord. A Christian couple should seek such a blessing by having many children and to use natural means of spacing between children (2-3 years).

It is not the duty of Christian couples to be fruitful.
That was the command given to Adam and Eve.
However, besides the fact they were not christians, things have also got side-tracked.
That original commanmd is on hold until god sets things straight.
Matthew 28:19,20 reveals the duty of christians.

The dictum to be fruitful and multiply was made back when there truly wasn't enough people on this earth to ensure the propagation of the human species. Today there are so many people that we may end up dying out because of overpopulation! So, I would say that NO it is no longer a valid or helpful direction to have many children.

"The early Fathers recognized that the purpose of sexual intercourse in natural law is procreation; contraceptive sex, which deliberately blocks that purpose, is a violation of natural law."
"EVERY CHURCH IN CHRISTENDOM CONDEMNED CONTRACEPTION UNTIL 1930, when, at its decennial Lambeth Conference, Anglicanism gave permission for the use of contraception in a few cases. Soon all Protestant denominations had adopted the secularist position on contraception. Today not one stands with the Catholic Church to maintain the ancient Christian faith on this issue."
Thomas Aquinas said:
"It is clear that offspring is the most essential thing in marriage, secondly fidelity, and thirdly [the] sacrament; even as to man it is more essential to be in nature than to be in grace, although it is more excellent to be in grace"
The CCC says:
"By its very nature the institution of marriage and married love is ordered to the procreation and education of the offspring, and it is in them that it finds its crowning glory" (CCC 1652). "Married couples should regard it as their proper mission to transmit human life and to educate their children" (CCC 2367).

It is a choice now.
Biblically speaking, the earth had to be populated in the beginning and I think we've done a great job being fruitful.

It's a question that is to be answered by God. Some couples are better suited to not have children and others are.
