It's stapled in pop culture; even among non-smokers, that Cuban cigars are the best. But why is this so? Is it just because they are a forbidden pleasure here in the States and has that "banned" quality to it? What actually makes Cuban originated cigars the best?

Cuban cigars use to be the best but that's no longer the case. Part making a cigar is aging the tobacco. The growers would actually age it for a couple of years. Nowadays, Cuba depends too much on the tobacco dollar so the tobacco is aged only a few months, leaving you with an inferior cigar.

No, at one time yes. Cuban Cigars in the past 10 years have been mass produced. The tobacco used hasn't being properly aged or grown in regions that aren't suitable. The quality of a Cubans has dropped dramatically. You are much better off with a top quality brand Dominican or Nicaraguan cigar like a 1926 or 64' Padron. Arturo Fuentes opus X than these "so called famous" Partagas or Montecristo Cohiba #2.
Try them. They will be a huge let down.
Cubans today are nothing but forbidden fruits. The general American will say "oh I smoked a Cuban it was the best". But in reality if you switched the label or did a blindfold test with a Dominican/Nicaraguan they would pick the Dominican or Nicaraguan. It's all in the "cabeza" when it comes to cubans.
That being said, Cuba has started to tackle their half *** production problem and within a few years you will see a better Cuban produced.
Until then, I'll smoke my Padrons.

here is some words of wisdom from an avid cigar aficionado.

first of all there are good cubans and there are bad cubans. The bad ones and the counterfeit ones are often the ones you're going to run into. So you need to make sure if you do purchase cubans illegally (yes they are illegal to buy in the united states) then you need to make sure it's from someone reputable.

Secondly consider this....

why buy a 30 dollar cigar...that's 30 dollars for ONE cigar when you can spend 15 or 20 and get one that's just as good if not better.

Most newbie cigar smokers want to jump right into the good stuff but the fact of the matter is that isn't possible. Smoking a cigar when you're new to it is like when you first start drinking beer...You need to start drinking the crappy stuff before you can truly appreciate the good stuff. So here's my advice to you

I would go onto a website like www.cigarbid.com and start talking on the forums there. They should be able to suggest a cigar for you. Start cheap. when you first start you wont be able to tell the difference between a 3 dollar smoke and a 30 dollar smoke. As you develop your pallate start weaning yourself off of the cheap ones and start spending a few extra bucks on the better ones until eventually you're buying super premiums.

Here are some good starter...medium and higher priced cigars you should smoke

CHEAP
cinco vegas gold
ACID: Blondies
Sancho Panza
these are a cheaper cigar and milder in flavor.they are a good starter smoke

MEDIUM
CAO: Cx2 MILD
CAO Mx2 FULL BODIED
CAO Brazila

I find CAO's to be a great medium price ranged cigar. they're affordable and they offer a good cigar for your money

EXPENSIVE
Opus Ex
Cinco de Anos
Padron 1964 Anniversary

these are quite expensive but well worth the price if you're an avid cigar smoker. I love these ones with a passion.

as far as the way you smoke them, Cubans are not any distinctive from the different stogie. I smoked 2 Cubans in Jamaica -- a Cohiba and a smaller Romeo y Julieta. purely take your cutter and eliminate the cap. make particular to not cut back too severe through fact which you will tear the wrapper leaf and all hell will take place. carry the corporate end of the cigar over the flame of a timber adventure or butane lighter with out actually touching the tobacco to the flame. enable it get singed until now puffing gently on the cigar. Draw sharply consisting of your cheeks if the cherry would not form real and initiate taking section in. you're carried out with the cigar while smoking ceases to be relaxing for you. additionally, by no capacity stub a cigar out. purely place it in an ashtray and permit it to burn out. happy smoking!

That really is a matter of opinion, Cubans definitely have a "forbidden fruit" quality to Americans. A lot of people would say Dominican, Nicaraguan, or Honduran cigars are much better.
