ok so my sister isnt in college right now because my mom cant work because she is disabled. im going to be a junior in hs next year and i was thinking that to help my sister be able to back to college is for both of us to work full time and be a part time student at community college.

we dont have that much money but i think and i think i could get into a great school but i think i should just go to community college for my sister, so i can let her get her dream job of being a teacher.

im just wondering if you think that will work or if u have any ideas on how to keep the house pay the other bills and have us both in school while taking care of my brother who will be in hs then. also with helping my mom who will probally never be able to get a job due to arthritus through out her entire body.

im not taking about now but when im in college in aug. 09

I think your dedication to your family is awesome. Community College is not a bad idea. You could go to school and work and be there for your family. Look into state colleges also. Talk to a school counselor and file for financial aide. God bless you.

If you're going to be a jr in high school next year, then you should be thinking about high school now yourself. Your sister can go to college more easily because she knows she wants to be a teacher. I think that college is generously paid for by a program Teach America that requires the student to teach in a community where they need teachers somehere in the United States right after graduation. Ask your sister to talk to someone about the most financial help she can get. Then, if she goes to college and stays in college during summers, she can finish faster.Teach, be done and have done it without getting deep in debt. I think it's a great deal - if you want to be a teacher.
In your case, what might be lurking behind your question is the need for one of you to be the 'grown up' at home for your brother. Have you talked to your mother about that?
Of course you CAN go to community college or any college around if they have night classes. But can you handle all the household stuff (if you share it, maybe), the bills (you say you'd both be working to help pay bills at home, is that it?) and giving your mom help and support while she's disabled? Where's your brother's help in all this?
One thing to do is learn how to live on a really lean budget. Your brother will be able to work when he's in high school and he can pay for his own sports fees, etc. I hope! He may have to skip sports if he is going to work.
Can you ask a relative for advice? They may be willing to pitch in and help just because they see the need is there for help.

Personally, I love community colleges. It's a great way to save on education expenses. You can even get financial aid and grants to pay for your tuition. Especially under your current circumstances. If your sis wants to be a teacher, she can take 2 years of transfer courses at the community college and then transfer to a university. By then, she will be able to know for sure how to work things out.

As for you, what do you want to do as a career? Community colleges offer a wide variety of career paths. Some of them pay very well! Start researching now and make your dreams happen. Don't give up. Contact your community college and ask to speak to someone in the financial aid office. Talk to your guidance counselor at school (hope you have one that really cares). Good luck!

First, let me say...my hats off to you for wanting to help your sister...you have great family values...ones that are seen much these days.

Have you tried applying for financial aid? Since what little information I have...your mom is on diability...I would think you would be a prime candidate for financial aid.

Also, if your sister is a full-time mom...our local community college offers a program that puts "moms---to work." It is called a displaced homemaker program...see if your local community college offers a program like that. Also, see if they offer childcare. Ours has a co-op program that you work 2 days a mth at the daycare...and the rest of the month is free.

OK...I would suggest getting your "bonehead" courses done at the community colleges. What I mean is get your basics done a the community colleges. They tend to cater more to individual students and are somewhat easier courses. Once you graduate, then go onto the bigger schools for your BS or BA degree.

While you are at community college....apply for scholarships. I take it that you are a good enough student to get some scholarships. But....keep your grades up!

My best wishes for you and your family. God Bless!

Are there any four year colleges in your area, preferably state schools? Be a commuter student, live at home and work part-time or full-time (which ever you can handle) Get fin. aid. In a situation like yours, you will probably be awarded a very high sum of money if you attend a state school.

I just graduated from High School, and have a decent GPA. I wanted to apply to many schools, and also see what scholarships I qualified for. I went to see my guidance counselor just before Graduation and he put me in touch with this website:

www.yourperfectcollege.com

I checked it out, and have been in touch with several scholarship programs, and have applied to over 30 schools without much hassle. It also didn't cost me anything so another plus as money is pretty tight for me. Good Luck.
