The moral of that story was only that a rich person can't go to heaven if they're not willing to give up everything for Jesus.
While some rich "Christians" may be hypocrites, there are many that give generously to the poor, donate money to charity, and do many other good things with their money.
It isn't that a person can't be rich, and not be a Christian. It's that a person who is rich tends to want to hold on to their money, and be selfish with it.

You know I've wondered this same thing. I live in a fairly wealthy area of the country (I am not one of them lol).. everyone drives Hummers, BMWs, Mercedes.. huge mansions. A cracker box house around here costs 1.5 million.... so lots of money.
And lots of Christians. And I wonder.. if you "can't take it with you", and "this life is just practice, it's the next life that matters".. then why all the wealth?
I don't have a problem with people enjoying the fruits of their labor.. but it confuses me, this seeming conflict of principles.

Cricket has it correct. Wealthy people tend to be greedy. The are a number of rich people who do good works with their money and WILL go to heaven. They are like all of us, sinners who have to ask forgiveness for their sins, give a tithe and witness to others. God does not ask that we give up everything to go to heaven, though he did ask that of one disciple. He ask that we follow him.

Because, like most sensible people, they realize that hell is nothing more than a "convert or die" threat?
