Drive slower, like 65 instead of 70 or 75.

Get a tune up before you leave, possibly to include new plugs and points.

Be sure your tires are sufficiently inflated.

Take as little weight in the car as you possibly can.

But keep things in perspective. On most trips, you will spend a whole lot more on motels / hotels and food than you will on gasoline. If your overall goal is overall savings on the vacation price-tag, price and rent your rooms before you leave over the Internet and look for good value places to eat rather than the hoidy toidy places. Taking a cooler in the car with drinks and snacks will also help on this latter point.

1. Make sure the car gets a good check up. Spark plugs, distributor cap, oil change, air filter, brakes, fluid levels.
2. Go the speed limit.
3. Don't brake and accelerate hard/fast.

Check out Mythbusters about some other economical ways.

only drive when necessary. for example if your staying with family carpool with them or drive to a place that you can stay all day so you don't have to drive to multiple places a day. also try keeping the radio and air to minimum because its mastes excess gas. have fun on your trip!
